If you’re anything like the average person, you will consume a fair amount of soda on a monthly basis. It has been found that more than 1/2 of the population consumes at least one can of soda every single day. Even for those that may not consume soda all that often, many drink other beverages that are high in sugar and contain unnecessary calories.
Regarding my personal experience with losing weight from change in beverage consumption, I went from drinking 7–14 cans of soda a week to not drinking it at all. This meant that on average, I was consuming an unnecessary 150–300 calories a day just from soda.
If you know anything about weight loss and cutting down on body fat, it is all based on calorie intake, and the only way to truly lose weight is to consume less calories. For me, switching to drinking ONLY water lead to a substantial decrease in calories consumed per month. Just four months into drinking only water, I was down just under 20 pounds (19.7 to be exact). Though it was initially difficult to cut out sugary drinks, I found it much easier to give up high calorie beverages than to change other aspects of my diet.
Overall, thought it may be different for some, I truly believe the easiest start to your weight loss journey is to cut out all drinks besides water. If your diet regarding what you drink is very poor, even just cutting down the amount of soda and such that you drink can be helpful. If you are able to slowly eliminate all of your soda consumption, you will have mastered the concept of self control, and it will then become easier for you to make the rest of your diet healthier.
