Humans are constantly innovating in the field of technology to make their lives easier. Until now, it has been proven that humans are able to create their own virtual world. Through a technology known as VR (Virtual Reality), humans are able to present an artificial three-dimensional world.

VR or Virtual Reality is a technology that allows users to interact with the environment in a virtual world that is simulated by a computer so that users seem to be in that environment.

VR or Virtual Reality works by manipulating the human brain so that the virtual environment feels real. In other words, VR erases the existence of the real world around the user

To be able to do this, of course, requires adequate supporting devices. The bare minimum is a VR headset like the Oculus Rift or the Samsung Gear VR.

VR headsets are generally shaped like diving goggles with closed lenses. With the front called the VR box, it is used to place the smartphone as the image source for projecting.

It's different again with VR headsets like the Oculus Rift which have more sophisticated technology. The VR device does not need to use a smartphone, but with a screen that displays videos and virtual images that can be connected to a computer via bluetooth.

The VR headset is also equipped with headphones and a joystick that is connected to VR to increase the interaction between the user and the created virtual environment.

When the user has entered the virtual world, the user has unlimited viewing angles or 360-degree viewing angles. The types of virtual worlds that are entered will of course vary and some even require users to move actively in the virtual world.

VR technology is not only used to play games or have fun. In countries like the United States, many universities and other educational institutions are using VR technology which is proven to be able to provide an immersive experience interacting with content.

For example, by using the Labster application, students can carry out virtual experiments or complex simulations that previously could only be done in special facilities with expensive equipment, of course.

Other examples occur at leading universities such as Harvard and Yale. They use VR to provide campus tours to prospective new students.

Not limited to education, VR technology can be used in everyday life. Cooking for example, with certain applications we can practice cooking without being afraid to damage the kitchen or throw away food.

VR technology can also be used as a means of traveling for travelers. With only a VR headset, they are able to travel the world and enjoy views that look authentic from home.

Even recently, a company called Generation Beyond is planning to travel to Mars with VR technology. They are planning to remodel the windows of a bus with a transparent 4K screen and replaced window film.

To make sure the experience is as realistic as possible, they mapped roads onto the virtual surface of Mars so the bus could move anywhere. Coupled with the surround sound system that plays the sound of the Martian wind inside the bus, the whole trip feels real, and is arguably the closest experience to a real field trip to Planet Mars.

Another example of the benefits of VR, in the past, doctors still had to guess to learn to dissect or know human internal organs, but nowadays, using VR technology, doctors can make it easier to be more accurate. Now VR is not only used in one field of medicine, but has also been widely used to treat pain, anxiety, PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), and stroke.

It is undeniable that the potential for VR is very broad. Coupled with the emergence of 5G technology, which of course makes it easier for VR technology to develop.

However, the development of this technology needs to be accompanied by the human policy itself to manage it. It is not impossible that with the development of VR technology, new and more dangerous cyber crimes have emerged.

The main problem with VR is the highly personal nature of the data collected i.e., biometric data such as iris or retina scans, fingerprints, facial geometry, and voice prints. Criminals can steal this data and then use it for something bad.

Another problem is that VR completely blocks us from the real world so users have to be really aware of the environment when using VR. Physical safety and environmental safety will be important to evaluate.

In addition, from a health perspective, excessive use of VR can cause motion sickness, such as dizziness, nausea, or even loss of consciousness.

The use of VR for too long also has an impact on the eyes of its users. Some experts say VR may also have a long-term effect on the eye's ability to focus on alternating near and far objects.

So far, the long-term effects of using VR for a long time have not been fully identified by experts. Even so, we should still anticipate the impact of using VR for a long time by pausing its use.

The potential of VR technology is of course also accompanied by its dangers. Thus, human wisdom is needed to effectively utilize this technology. It is not impossible, humans will once again reach a new era of technology that makes it easier for humans to carry out their daily activities or even fall into a terrible technological era.
