If you have heard that the world will end in the next six months for real, what would be your reaction?

This kind of story circulating over the internet or the news is no longer new to us. Sometimes even if it is real the government seems to ignore it and tell the public that it is a hoax.

In today’s post I am going to give my review about the film I just watched last night on Netflix. The main characters are Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. The film is “Don’t Look Up” by the producer and director Adam McKay. Don’t you worry I will not spoil much of this film if you have not watched it yet.

It was released on December 10, 2021 in theatres and on the 24th on Netflix streaming.

I began watching films of Leonardo when I first knew him for his movie Titanic in 1997 and it was also released in the US in December which was directed by James Cameron.

Don’t Look Up receives mixed reviews from critics. Some praised the cast but others found the film clumsy and having an excessive pride of achievements.

The Plot

A Ph.D. candidate in Michigan State University Astronomy, Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence) discovered an unknown comet. He told it to her professor, Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo DiCaprio), and the latter calculates that it will have a direct impact on earth in nearly six months. The comet is like the size of Mount Everest and would wipe out the entire human race on earth. More like the extinction of the dinosaurs sixty five million years ago. Dibiasky and Mindy were accompanied by NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office head Dr. Teddy Oglethorpe (Rob Morgan) to the White House but the President Janie Orlean (Meryl Streep), doesn’t seem to concern her much.

This is where frustrations occur. Kate just wanted to let the people know about the great catastrophe coming that is more like a doomsday. However the people who should be the one to take responsibility and action don't seem to care.

Kate tries to leak the information to the news media but she was mocked instead because she was carried away when the hosts of the talk show appeared not taking it seriously. Netizens made memes of her on different social media platforms.

The President finally announces about the comet's threat and launches a mission to strike it with nuclear weapons. However it was aborted because the President receives information from the billionaire CEO of BASH tech company that the comet contains rare-earth elements that are worth trillions of dollars. More likely just let the comet hit the earth.

My Reaction

I am not sure as to whether I should laugh or cry while watching the film. The truth is it portrays what is really happening right now. I mean people in every social media still find time to make fun even if they literally will die. Some would still ask to like and subscribe even at the last of their breath (click tongue).

Say for example the comet hitting earth is real, that would be a total destruction. But I think the total devastation is not the human extinction due to impact, it is the reality that is being hidden to us. I have seen a lot of similar films like this and they always have an escape plan, a bunker. But it is intended only for high government officials and prominent people. And common people like us will just die helpless.

Another thing that is kind of devastating about this is that rich people still think about opportunities even if it will harm humanity. They always care about profit until the last day on earth.

My rating

Overall I would give it a five star rating as my own personal review. It was entertaining and had a very good sense of humor. Not just that it can relate to the current situation particularly on relationships and social media but the involvement of the administration.

There are a lot of controversies and conspiracies that are circulating in every government which is quite obvious to the public but still they want to keep it a secret. You know, like covering up scenarios and events for the sake of somebody’s reputation.

But no matter how hard they try to hide things to people the truth will always reveal.

These days it seems we can no longer hide anything. Social media has let the people show their secrets freely. The funny thing is that it benefits them and even earns money.  I think they are just being true to themselves and that is the message the movie wants to send to use.

Be true to yourself. Drink, eat and be merry for doomsday comes we are all nothing but dust particles in the universe.

Thanks for reading. Ciao!
