Nakshi kantha is our tradition. Part of our folk art. Once upon a time this kantha was very popular. This kantha can still be seen in rural areas of Bengal. During leisure time or on rainy days, women sit together and sew kantha by telling stories and chats. Grandmothers still gift this nakshi kantha when their grandchildren are newly married or have children. At one time these kanthas were also given as gifts at weddings.
These kanthas have a variety of flower, leaf or other designs. In some kanthas, the nature of rural Bengal is also highlighted. The joy and pain of a family is hidden behind the every stitch of a kantha.
Various stitches are made on the kantha with colored yarn.
Evidence that Nakshi Kantha can be a life story is found in Jasim Uddin's poem "Nakshi Kantha Field". Rupai and Saju's love and estrangement were all revealed in that kantha. Some portion of the poem-
"Saju draws pictures all night, all of their
memories, spreading the nakshi-kantha"
Many happy and sad memories are written and the tragedy of their life is told line by line in that kantha , which we know from the poem!
Saju's last wish was that the kantha put over her grave. Her last wish was fulfilled...π₯
Ultimately this kantha is part of our culture. It is our responsibility to protect the culture!
