Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 12 is set to receive a big camera upgrade over the iPhone 11. Now we know one way this could be achieved.
iPhone 12 Concept Renders
Reveals how Apple’s new Time-Of-Flight (ToF) camera technology could improve Face ID performance and enable “in-air gesturing” in multiple devices, including iPhones and in-car control systems.
Full details of the new camera are provided in two new patent applications which describe how a grid of dots is projected onto a scene, while the reflections are captured by clusters of sensors. The time taken between transmission and reception allows the device to calculate the precise distance to each dot and then generate a three dimensional map of the scene.
Placing the new camera on the front of the phone rather than the rear, enables its use for Face ID and “in-air gesturing” while it is lying flat or installed in a vehicle.
In-air gesturing allows touch-free control of a device by performing hand or finger movements close by. It’s a concept that will be familiar to Google Pixel owners who received a disappointingly watered-down radar-based version of a similar feature in last year’s Pixel 4.
For iPhone lovers and users it’s a good new. ❤
