The Chevy Camaro is no longer available in Russia, GM Authority has uncovered. With the Camaro’s departure, the only remaining vehicles offered in Russia are the Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Traverse.
“Currently we focus on premium crossovers and SUVs on the Russian market,” said GM Russia communications’ Anita Ratser.
This stands in stark contrast to Chevrolet’s position in 2015, when the Bow Tie brand moved to withdraw from the mainstream Russian vehicle segments. As we reported previously, Chevrolet previously focused on selling only its “iconic” products in Russia, such as the Corvette , Tahoeand Camaro.
It’s also worth mentioning that General Motors recently sold its St. Petersburg Assembly plant, considered GM’s newest and most state-of-the-art production facility in Russia, to South Korean automaker Hyundai. Earlier this month, it was reported that the Russian government gave the green-light for the sale to move forward after a review by the Russian antitrust body.
The Russian-spec Chevy Camaro was offered exclusively with the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG engine. Unlike the North American-spec Camaro, the LTG in the Russian Camaro was given a unique tune for tax purposes, producing a maximum of 237 horsepower, 38 ponies down compared to the standard 275 horsepower.
While down on power, the Russian-spec Camaro still produced the standard 295 pound-feet of torque. However, the power loss resulted in a slightly lower 0-to-100 km/h (62 mph) time of 5.9 seconds, about 0.4 seconds slower than the LTG-equipped North American Chevy Camaro.
The Russian Chevy Camaro was offered exclusively in the Coupe body style, as well as a single trim that incorporated exterior design elements of the Camaro SS and the 2LT equipment level with the RS package. This particular configuration was not offered in any other markets.
Pricing for the Russian-spec Chevy Camaro started at 2,990,000 rubles, or $39,677 at current exchange rates (08/25/2020).
