Now let's know something about what this autopsy is, why, what to do, what to do, how to do it: Synonym- -Postmortem -Necropsy -Thanatopsy Definition: Autopsy may be defined as complete thorough systemic and scientific, external and internal examination of dead body carried out under the law of state to determine the cause, nature, time of sudden, suspicious, unexpected and medically unwanted death. Types of autopsy: 1β£ Medico-legal: When autopsy is compulsory by law and done in unnatural and suspicious circumstances of death, to find out the cause of death, to help in the administration of justice .. 2β£ Pathological autopsy: When autopsy is performed by a pathologist or a clinician to diagnose the cause of death, where diagnosis Couldn't be reached during treatment. 3β£ Anatomical autopsy: When the dead bodies are dissected by the students of academic purposes .. π Pre-requisite of medico-legal autopsy: Documentary pre-requisite: : Inquest report : Chalan π΅ If unidentified: : Photographs : Chalan π΅ If hospital death: : Death certificate : hospital record Identification of victim by police constable Govt. approved mortuary Criteria- : Day light : Adequate water supply : Drainage : instruments : disinfectant -Autopsy is conducted by govt. registered medical officer .. Objectives of medico-legal autopsy: -The identity of the body -the cause of death -the nature and number of injury -the time of death -the presence of poison -the expectation of duration of life for insurance purposes -the presence of natural diseases and contribution to death, espeically where there is also trauma -in new born infant -to determine the question of live birth and viability of child. Authorized person for holding the autopsy: -Professor and lecturer of forensic medicine of govt. medical college. -Residential Medical Officer in District hospital -Civil Surgeon. NcIncision given during autopsy: Head: -Transverse incision from one mastoid process to another process -Reflect the skin upto nasion and external occipital potrubarance -Reflect the scalp -Skull is cut by electric saw. Neck, thorax and abdomen: 1) I incision- Vertical incision from symphysis manti to symphysis pubis. 2) Y incision- 2 similiar incision from acromion process to below the breast upto xyphoid process on both side. 3) Modified Y shape- Suprastarnal notch to along the clavicle upto mid of the clavicle-> behind the neck-> behind the sternocleidomastoid-> upto mastoid process .. (incision is done by surgical blade, and skull is cut by electric saw) Ervation Preservation of viscera during autopsy: -Stomach and itβs content -Upper part of small intestine -Liver 500gm, in children whole liver -Longitudinal section of half of both kidney etc Erv Preservatives: Saturated solution of common salt (most commonly used)
