FoMo is an abbreviation of fear of missing out, the understanding of this is a condition where a person experiences worries and fears of being left behind by news or ongoing trends.

People who experience FOMO will often feel left behind among friends or other people, also feel outdated and not social. Those who experience FOMO also have the notion that other people have very happy lives, are always having fun and have a much better life than themselves.

This condition is felt by many teenagers, especially for those who are active in using social media. Although social media has many useful things, it cannot be denied that social media also has a negative impact. Many people are competing to be the most up-to-date about certain information and show fun on social media.

Not infrequently this activity triggers other people to have jealousy, this can result in other people feeling their life is not fun and not fun. The feeling of FOMO can also be related to the desire to always be involved in lots of fun or proud moments so that they can be uploaded on social media.

For the sake of showing and pursuing the existence and recognition of others, some and even many people intentionally post or post pictures, writings, and display images that do not suit themselves.

What is the impact of FOMO?

From existing research, the impact of FOMO is a feeling of disconnection from others and a sense of dissatisfaction with life. According to a 2013 study published in the journal Computer in Human Behavior, people who have high levels of FOMO tend to feel less connected to their daily lives.

Seeing other people's uploads that show happiness, success, etc. causes people who experience FOMO to question their abilities, and even question the existence of their lives. This feeling of being left behind over time will cause anxiety which will trigger excessive stress

The following are ways to avoid and overcome the occurrence of FOMO, namely by:

  • Limiting time on social media

  • Realizing that what is uploaded on social media is a fabrication (things uploaded on social media are not as beautiful as the reality, people only upload their happy moments)

  • Focus on your strengths or potential

  • Be grateful

  • Meditation

  • Filter viewed content

So that's the understanding of FOMO among teenagers, thank you for reading.
