Communication in the Digital Age
In my opinion, the Digital Era is the same as globalization, which means the process of international integration that occurs due to the exchange of world views, products, cultural aspects, thoughts and others, which are mostly caused by the advancement of the internet, transportation, and telecommunication infrastructure. Now in the Digital Age, many people can communicate with each other closely with friends, relatives, or relatives even though they are far apart.
In this Digital Age, we are also guided to live a life of communication with the right communication ethics. The communication ethic has basic values such as abstract concepts that make the rules very important in human life, for the sake of the system in life.
In addition to the existence of ethics in communicating in human life, there is also the application of communication norms, which means rules or guidelines that regulate actions that can be done and should not be done. These norms relate to wrong or right in communicating and the existence of formal and informal actions.
In this case, it can be an example of how we speak lies. This can violate ethics and is not in accordance with applicable values and norms, in a formal context we will be subject to legal sanctions but almost everyone is used to speaking lies in everyday life and will be subject to social sanctions in the form of no longer being trusted by others if we speak lie. Other examples of us speaking rudely, not being respectful when walking in front of our parents, gossiping, using words that are inappropriate to hear and many other examples of ethical violations in everyday life.
In addition to examples of bad violations, there are also good violations in human life such as speaking politely to people, being polite and respectful when spoken to by other people, bowing when crossing other people, especially people who are older than us, wearing appropriate clothes.
From the example above, we can conclude that ethics, values, and norms are products of culture and society, so their application varies from one culture to another and from one society to another. The sanctions given for violating also vary. So it is very possible for an act to be said to be ethical in culture A and unethical in culture B.
So communication ethics can be said to be verbal if it emphasizes the use of words and sentences that are appropriate or ethical, honest, well structured, such as speaking or speaking. While communication ethics is said to be non-verbal if it emphasizes the way or technique or style of communication factors such as cultural factors that are very influential.
Behind this communication ethic, there is also a cyber culture that is very influential in the digital era. Cyberculture or internet culture is currently very helpful for internet users in terms of communicating without having to do face-to-face meetings, because now there are many social applications that make it easier for users to communicate with other people. Examples of the applications used are Whatsapp, Instagram, Facebook. However, not all communication made through the internet has a positive side but there are some negative things caused by internet culture.
Therefore, the relationship between humans is not limited. With the internet, humans can communicate remotely quickly. Therefore, at this time humans cannot be separated from cyber culture and will continue to be dependent on the internet in the future.
From the explanation of cyber culture, we can understand what is meant by humans being able to communicate even at long distances. Now, long-distance communication can be called social interaction. Social interactions that initially had to be face-to-face now don't have to be face-to-face.
Human interaction is now slowly being replaced by human interaction with gadgets. Whenever and wherever people always depend on their gadgets. People prefer to find friends on social media rather than getting acquainted with friends on a public vehicle. More people are engrossed in their gadgets than interacting with the social environment around them. The development of gadgets today has overcome the real reality and become a new trend for society. So as time goes on and modern times, social interaction decreases.
