Hachiko is known for being an extremely faithful pet to his owner, who after his death was still waiting for him outside the train station, because he hoped he would return. In fact this story happened in real life and later became a movie. However, there are two versions, one American and one Japanese.
Hachiko was and will always be called the most famous dog in Japan, so something you can not miss when visiting Tokyo is to visit the statue of the same, which is a small bronze statue located a few meters from the busiest intersection in the world. Exactly you could say that it is located in the vicinity of Shibuya station, being one of the most popular places according to its inhabitants.
What is the connection that this great dog has with Japan?
This incredible dog of Akita breed, which is very common in Japan, was actually the pet of HidesaburÅ Ueno a professor at the University of Tokyo, who made every day the same journey by train to go to work and Hachiko his faithful companion kept him company until the train station, and on the way back the dog was there waiting for him, so every day until one day Ueno did not return to the station.
Apparently the teacher died at work of a heart attack and from then on Hachiko went every day to Shibuya Station every afternoon for 11 years. It wasn't until 1935 that he was found lifeless in the same place where he was waiting for his owner.
Hachiko was loved by all travelers and workers who were near that place, becoming a very famous dog. For this reason, a very nice statue was erected with the same pose that Hachiko used to have when he was waiting for his owner when he came back from work.
It is important to note that right in front of Hachiko's statue is an old passenger car converted into Hachiko's museum, which is a place full of newspaper clippings that made reference to the dog during the 1920s, photographs and other objects that recall his story.
I had previously known this story, but what I was not aware of was the simple fact that it was based on something real that happened in Japan.
