Egyptians slept with wooden pillows!

It is very curious, but the Egyptians believed that it was possible to wake up from death, as when we wake up from a dream, that is, it becomes for them a metaphor of rebirth. However, they paid much attention to their dreams, since, the mentality of the ancient Egyptians believed that through dreams the person woke up in another reality. For example, in a supernatural world in which they could live completely real events.

Well, having said this, it is important to emphasize that this led them to believe that the dream visions should be told upon awakening, since they allowed them to know the events of the future. Without leaving aside that through the mouths of the gods or deceased relatives during dreams they left wise advice or revealed truths that were hidden for a long time and a clear example of this is the pharaoh Sesostris I.

What was the revelation that Pharaoh Sesostris I had?

One night, while all of Egypt slept, Pharaoh Sesostris I had an apparition of his father through dreams, who mentioned to him that his death was the result of a harem conspiracy. With bitterness, he told him how it was, since the traitors lived in the palace.

The late pharaoh narrated that that night, after dinner, he wanted to rest a little, taking an hour lying on his bed. However, he was very tired, so he let himself sleep, but he was not 100% protected, so some men entered his room with weapons and proceeded to assassinate him, which was really sad for the people and for his own son.

It is very important to note that the Egyptians used magic to protect their dreams, that is, for them the moment of sleeping was very dangerous because the person was completely unprotected and could be visited by nightmares, evil spirits or just real people. Therefore, when someone slept it was necessary for him to be protected by means of amulets that would watch over him and his dreams. To protect children, magical formulas were written on pieces of papyrus, which were rolled up in a leather or wooden case to be worn as a necklace.

But, there is another curious aspect that completely caught my attention. The Egyptians slept with wooden pillows. Isn't that amazing? To me, it really is. And the fact is that for the Egyptians they were very comfortable pillows, they did not hurt and allowed the head to rest without falling completely to the ground, they were called headrests. Without leaving aside that it fulfilled the function of an amulet, that is, by placing it under the head, it was supposed to protect the person from the dangers of death. Isn't it something interesting?

Personally, I must admit that this fact attracted all my attention, because it is surprising and interesting the beliefs and how sleeping was a symbol of danger in those times. However, to my greatest surprise, I still cannot assimilate that Egyptians used to sleep with wooden pillows. All this attracted my absolute interest, so when I researched about it, I was more shocked than before. Without leaving aside that it is a fact or history that many of us should know at some point.
