Agoshima is a distant volcanic island located in the Pacific Ocean 358 km south of Tokyo, being a remote and topographically most interesting island of the Izu archipelago. The island is practically a volcanic crater, inside of which is a minor volcano.
The island is inhabited by a maximum of 200 inhabitants and has an area of 8.75 km2. This is a place little affected by tourism and almost untouched, making it the ideal place for nature lovers, explorers and outdoor enthusiasts.
However, there is only one way to get to Aogashima and that is via Hachijojima, which is a larger island 70 km further north. It has an airport, so it is accessible by air and by sea from Tokyo. For example, the boat trip from this island to Agoshima takes about 3 hours, while by helicopter it takes about 20 minutes, so the second option is more advisable.
It is important to note that the topography of this beautiful island is imposing, as you can see steep cliffs that rise from the sea on all four sides, and then disappear inland creating a large ringed pot. For this reason there are activities with viewpoints overlooking the crater and the sea. Not to mention that during the night you can contemplate a beautiful sky full of shining stars.
The most interesting thing about Aogashima is that it is part of Tokyo, but unlike the big city with the intense lights and the hustle and bustle of the metropolis, this island is another world. Well, life on the island is slow, that is, there is only one store, a post office and two bars at the most. Not to mention that in these bars you can try some crazy food and taste the famous Aochu.
This island is like a dream! Personally it has attracted my full attention, few people but a place that has many activities in nature, mentioning also that it has a very interesting history, able to catch the attention of any traveler.
