A work of art that is unavoidable to look at!
Many places in the world have really wonderful things, cultures or places, so it never ceases to amaze. An example of the same would be Japan, as its temples, shrines, its fast and punctual trains or even, the neon signs catch anyone's attention easily. But, what really makes you look at the ground as you walk the streets of this beautiful country are the manhole covers, which you're probably wondering what makes it special.
You could say that during the Meiji restoration the sewers were not in very good condition, in fact both the symphony of the designs and the colors were not what you see today. As time went by, many Japanese sewers had their own designs, such as the clock tower in the city of Sapporo or Mount Fuji in the city of Fuji.
These culverts show illustrations of historical characters and some specialties of the area. For example, sports, festivals or even colorful characters related to the place.
During the 1980s, it was decided to decorate these objects with visual designs and lots of color. Currently 95% of the cities and towns in the country have their own design, which is estimated that there are about 19,000 different designs and more than 10 million decorated caps. As mentioned above, they are specific aspects of the flora and fauna of the region, even designs from manga or anime. In fact, for the inhabitants these manhole covers are works of art.
It is important to mention that in Japan you will also find manhole covers with designs that are not really sewers, such as fire hydrants, a drinking fountain or electrical supplies, since they are not part of the Japanese sewer network.
This is really impressive, because it's the first time I see something similar, I hope someday to see it personally!
