The area around Oplenac has always been known for its vines, so this area is proudly called the capital of Serbian vines, but also - Serbian Tuscany.
Back in 1931, King Aleksandar Karađorđević built the first winery under the hill Oplenac, and he is considered the founder of viticulture in this area. Since that year, more and more intensive planting of vineyards has started, so now there are about 500 hectares of vineyards in the municipality of Topola.
The area around Topola and Oplenac has always been known for its vine and wine, which is considered one of the best in this area. Suitable climate and soil is ideal for growing varietal vines and making quality wines.
The ancient Romans in the neighboring village and the hill of Oplenac - Vinča, named Vince after the quality wine that is obtained from extremely tasty and fragrant grapes. Grapes and wine now represent the symbol of every village in this area, which is why this area is proudly called the capital of Serbian vines. The name "Šumadijska Tuscany" is often used in the media to represent Topola.
The enchanting speeches and the realization that it was here that the kings wished to rest forever are so enchanting. In addition to the fact that many historical events took place in this area, this area of Šumadija is especially interesting because one whole royal dynasty found peace in the magnificent temple of St. George, on top of the hill Oplenac. Welcome to Topola, or as they still call it, Karadjordjev grad, a place where kings rest, and history still lives on.
The preserved writings say that during the First Serbian Uprising, grapes bore so much that there was not enough space for its storage. Immediately behind the church of St. George, on the slope of Oplenac, there are vineyards and the Vinogradar's house.
The church was built when grapes were processed in it until the First World War. A barrel from 1909 has been preserved from this king's cellar, which King Peter I received as a gift.
