Skadarlija - a bohemian quarter in the heart of Belgrade

Even today, Skadarlija is a symbol of Belgrade, although large shopping malls have become "new centers" of the capital. Skadarlija still stands out as a tourist destination, a bohemian quarter, an unavoidable corner for foreigners. The first buildings on the ground of today's Skadarlija were built around 1717. In the middle of the 19th century, there was a Gypsy neighborhood (Šićan-mala) with fourteen houses, which in 1872 officially became Skadarska Street.

Only a few years later, there were about a hundred houses in Skadarska, the industrial complex "Mala Pivara", about twenty wells and the Skadarska fountain. At the beginning of the 20th century, as well as between the two wars, Skadarlija slowly gained a tavern. To this day, the cobblestones have remained and defend the tradition of this ethno corner of Belgrade.

Today, Skadarlija is just a place of mythical fog, false exclusivity, which has the least place here, deliberately charging for its greatest value - the inviolability of its spaces. But the walls of Skadarlija's taverns no longer speak, the spirit of the place wandered with those who gave it uniqueness and built its identity. Surrendered to commercialization, pliable and forced, the spirit of Skadarlija disappeared.

Skadarlija is deserted and lands. Through the street where people used to live, spend the night, today you just walk by; left to visitors, guests, strangers, its inhabitants went somewhere. No longer as a hub and promenade, today it is just a shortcut - near Strahinjića Bana Street.
