Coins may often be underestimated because the nominal is quite small. Yet behind it, there is a very valuable money even more than the price of gold.
One of them was money that looked ordinary but was well deserved by a man named Don Lutes. The coin is a 1943 Bronze Licoln penny.
The coin attracted attention because many bid for it. According to Heritage Auctions, the money was reported to have been sold for USD 204,000 in January.
“Lutes, who was 16 at the time, received copper-colored pennies in his high school canteen in 1947,”in addition, Lutes is known to have kept the coin until his death in 2018. While still ill, he handed it over to Heritage.
Furthermore, according to the Dallas-based auction company, the proceeds of the sale were then channeled to the Berkshire Athenaeum in his hometown of Pittsfield, Massachusetts.
Most Hunted Coins
Coins worth a penny have been around since the beginning of the US monetary system. Several penny prototypes were produced in 1792, including the large Birch penny," said Stone.
It costs billions of dollars, to be exact, USD 2.6 million. This makes it one of the most expensive coins for a penny to be auctioned. For your information, the value of a penny depends on the quality and rarity.
In addition, there are other coins that are of high value when they are auctioned, here is a summary.
1. 1943 Bronze Lincoln

Only a handful of bronze coins have been found, one of which belonged to Lutes. "Lincoln's most valuable penny sold privately in 2010 for $1.7 million," said Stone.
Then Stone explained that for copper in the war effort, the US Mint then turned to making money from zinc-coated steel planchet. So, not from ordinary bronze coins.
In his estimation Stone said, currently there may be 15 to 20 collectors. However, there must be a few more collectors who haven't been counted.
“For example, like the Lutes coin, it can sell for around USD 150,000 to 200,000. Then Heritage auctioned another similar one, but at a slightly lower quality for USD 186,000 earlier this month,” he said.
2. 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse

James Bucki, one of the coin experts at The Spruce Carfts, said the double was created and then caused some misalignment. The duplication was made due to an error in the printing process.
The 1969-S Doubled Die Obverse coin was coined to highlight the words "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST," he said. In addition, there is also the letter "S" just below the year 1969, which means it was made in the San Francisco Mint.
Bucki estimates that about 1,000 or less had been made before the Mint discovered the error. Also, in good condition or new these coins can cost around USD 75,000.
3. 1992 Close AM Reverse

Most pennies minted that year had clear spaces between the letters. Stone explained, “Close AM 1992, foot 'A' and left foot 'M' in the word 'AMERICA' From right.”
It was during the 1990s and early 2000s that the Mint used a different kind of concrete to produce coins. Bucki explained that the production of the coins was used for circulation and evidence for collectors.
However, due to an error, the proof concrete was finally made in 1993. In addition, it is also possible that the entire starting building of about 250,000 cents was made this way, he said. This makes this coin easier to find than the 1969 Doubled Die coin.
4. 1972 Doubled Die Observe

Similar to the 1969 Doubled Die, the concrete on this penny stands out in the words “LIBERTY” and “IN GOD WE TRUST”, says Stone.
Bucki estimates that at least 250,000 coins were sold. "I know a few people who have it."
Meanwhile, Bucki also revealed that the possible price is around USD 100. While a cleaner one could cost USD 500.

While the doubling on this coin isn't quite as prominent as the 1972 Doubled Die coin, Bucki says it's quite noticeable. He said, especially on the word “LIBERTY”, precisely the letter “B”.
“This is one of the easiest pennies to find. I've found it myself," he said.
Batu revealed, if this coin is found in good condition it can reach a price of up to usd 45.

The writing on this coin may look double at first glance. “Especially in the words 'ONE CENT' and 'E PLURIBUS UNUM'. It looks double,” said Bucki
