There is no such thing as a magic medication, as they say (yet). But what if you could lose weight without having to exercise?

While this may appear to be an urban legend, it is feasible to lose weight without exercising.

The first tip is to eat less. That's true, if you eat less, you'll lose weight even if you don't exercise.

Weight loss without exercise appears to be a physiologic conundrum, but it's fairly straightforward. It happens when the body burns fat instead of carbohydrates or protein for energy.

The liver and kidneys, two organs that act in "fight or flight" mode, are the principal places in the body where fat is burned.

When meal intake is limited and blood sugar levels are high, the body begins to burn stored fat for energy rather than glucose from carbohydrates (glucose provides immediate energy)

Fat is catabolized (broken down) in the liver and converted to a fatty acid that the body can use for energy when it is burned.

When blood sugar levels are low, an excess of fatty acids is flushed out of the body as ketones (such as when fasting or dieting).

Fat loses its fuel value, or energy content, at a slower rate than carbohydrate or protein, which is why exercise doesn't help as much when weight reduction occurs without activity.
