Identity comes from English: "Identity", which literally means the characteristics, signs or identities attached to someone or something that distinguishes them from others. In terms of anthropology, identity is a characteristic that describes and corresponds to the awareness of oneself, one's own group, one's own group, one's own community, or one's own country. Referring to this understanding, identity is not limited to individuals but also applies to a group.
National identity which comes from the word "National Identity" can be interpreted as "National Personality" or "National Identity" National personality or national identity is the identity that is owned by a nation. The personality or identity of the Indonesian nation will be different from the personality or identity of the American, British, etc. We adopt our personality or national identity from cultural and religious values which we believe to be true. if there are people who say that the Indonesian nation is a civilized nation, a cultured nation, an ethical nation, then that is what we say everyday we do not heed moral and ethical values, then we cannot be said as someone who has a personality or national identity. Courtesy, hospitality is one of the many aspects of our national identity. We must cultivate this kind of national identity and preserve it, so that we are still classified by other nations as civilized ethnic groups.
This national identity is formed because we feel that we as Indonesians have a common experience, the same history and the same suffering. in the period before independence, the Indonesian people had the same experience and also had the same history in expelling the invaders from Indonesia. How great the suffering experienced by the Indonesian people at that time, both physically and non-physically. It was this bitter experience that was different, different ethnic groups, different cultures and different religions manifested a common desire to expel the invaders. Experiences like these can form a national identity. This national identity is also formed through mutual cooperation between one identity and another. Although each group has many differences, the strong desire between them to bind their group together with other groups can also form a national identity.
The birth of a nation's identity cannot be separated from the support of objective factors, namely factors related to geography, ecology, and demographics, as well as subjective factors, namely historical, political, social and cultural factors owned by that nation.
Likewise, the birth of the national identity of the Indonesian nation as an archipelagic region with a tropical climate and located at a crossroads of communication between the world's regions of Southeast Asia, has also influenced the development of the demographic, economic, social, and cultural life of the Indonesian nation. , the nation and state of the nation along with the identity of the Indonesian nation in the twentieth century.
Robet de Ventos put forward a theory about the emergence of national identity as a result of historical interactions between four important factors, namely:
1. Primary factors
Which include ethnicity, territory, language, religion and the like.
2. Supporting factors
Include the development of communication and technology, the birth of a modern armed force, and the centralization of the monarchy.
3. The pull factor
When it includes the codification of language in official grammar, the growth of the bureaucracy and the strengthening of the national education system.
4. Relative factors
Include oppression, domination and seeking alternative identities through the collective memory of the people.
These four factors are basically included in the process of forming the national identity of the Indonesian nation which has developed from the period before Indonesia achieved independence.
In conclusion: Understanding the National Identity of the Indonesian Nation contains the identity of the Indonesian people to defend their country during the occupation, it turns out that Indonesia, which you know as a safe and peaceful country, is the fruit of the struggle of its heroes to expel invaders from the Indonesian state.
