In our society, some people are seen to leave their work and find fault with others. Later, in addition to blaming others, the people of that class spread various slanders. Regarding such people, Allah the Almighty has said in the Holy Qur'an, "And you will not find fault with others." (Surat al-Hujurat, verse 12)
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) also said about this form of backbiting, ‘In the absence of someone, exposing his faults to others is haraam according to Islamic law and a grave sin. There is bad news of destruction in Islam for those who blame others from front to back. (Muslim)
The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) gave the best definition of backbiting. It is known from a hadith narrated from the Companion Abu Hurairah that Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, "Do you know what backbiting is?" The Companions said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He said, "Talking about any of your brothers (religious) that he dislikes is backbiting." The Companions asked, "O Messenger of Allah, if the fault I am talking about is in my brother, will it be backbiting?" The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) replied, "If the guilt you speak of is in your brother, then you must have backbited, and if what you say is not in him, then you have slandered him." (Muslim)
Many may think that I do not gossip. I just hear others say. No, they have no protection. Because they are helping the backbiter to commit this sin. If the backbiter does not find someone to backbite, he will not be able to backbite. And so Allah's command is also for those who hear backbiting. In the eyes of Islam, backbiting is forbidden, just as listening to backbiting is forbidden. He who hears backbiting also becomes a partner in the sin of backbiting. It is in the hadith, when someone sits with you and backbites another, tell him to stop, be careful by reminding him of Allah's command. And if that doesn't work, get out of there. Gossip cannot be heard in any way.
Speaking about the backbiters, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that the slanderer will not be able to enter Paradise. (Bukhari and Muslim)
Narrated Anas: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: When I was taken to Miraj, I was passing by a group of people with copper nails. They were hitting their faces and chests with their nails. I asked, O Gabriel! Who are these? Gabriel (peace be upon him) said, "They used to eat human flesh in the world and destroy their dignity." That is, they used to gossip and gossip about people. (Abu Dawood)
Narrated Aisha: Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: Whoever eats the flesh of his brother in this world, that is, backbiting, will be brought before the backbiter on the Day of Resurrection, and will be told to eat his flesh as if he were alive. To eat his flesh. Then he will eat it screaming despite his reluctance. (Bukhari)
