UN COUNCIL CONSIDERS REPORT THIS WEEK
The Security Council's committee on the admission of new members by an overwhelming majority favours the immediate admission of Bangladesh into the United Nations today. The Security Council will meet before the end of this week to consider the report of the committee. A final decision on the admission of Bangladesh continues to rest on China as it could go against the majority view in the committee by using its hitherto unexercised veto.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Abdus Samad Azad today reiterates his appeal to the members of the United Nations to help Bangladesh's entry in the world body. He says that Bangladesh, which has so far been recognised by 82 countries, including four permanent members of the Security Council, fulfils all conditions necessary for such membership.
BANGABANDHU TO MEET ENVOYS ON AUGUST 29
Prime Minister Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman is expected to address a conference of Bangladesh envoys to European countries in Geneva on August 29.
Bangabandhu today has his usual morning walk and looks bright, although he expresses his anxiety to go back home, according to a health bulletin issued today by his personal physician.
MASS MOVEMENT IF NO CONSTITUTION BY OCTOBER 10
The National Awami Party (Bhashani) Chief Maulana Bhashani today threatens to launch a country-wide mass movement if the government fails to give the nation a constitution by October 10 this year. He also demands that the constitution should provide for the proportionate representation of workers and peasants.
DISTRIBUTION ANOMALIES CAUSE PRICE HIKE
The system of distribution of essential items imported through the Trading Corporation of Bangladesh is alleged to be full of anomalies and irregularities. It has caused resentment among general people and trading circles. It is alleged that non-trader permit holders sell permits at a price 200 percent higher than others. The result is that prices are being immediately pushed up in the market.
