What is the first thing you do when you get up in the morning?

Most people first check their mobile phones after waking up. Some take tea as β€œBed Tea” right after they come alive and then they perform other stuff. Some take shower and get fresh. Some keep laying on bed after waking up because they don't have enough energy to get up and after wasting a lot of time in bed they get up. On the contrary, there are many people in this world who first set their beds and pillows after waking up. Moreover they keep their books on the study table or book racks in apple pie order and then they do other work.

A question might come in your mind that this is a very common thing but it's not actually. There is philosophy in the background.

In 2014, there was an annual farewell ceremony at the University of Texas. The Chief Guest spoke for some time to the audience and his speech was great and stunning. He received a great applause from the audience and 17M people have watched this speech on social sites so far.

Chief Guest was ex-seller of the American Navy, Admiral William McRaven. He had lived a tough life so far. William gave some outstanding tips related to his professional life and the whole hall stood up from chairs to show respect. Whoever listened to that speech saw a positive change in his life.

He shared some of his great experiences with the audience so that they can overcome the problems of their lives and can be successful in their lives by adopting them. When William McRaven was under training in the Navy, the first thing he used to do is to make his bed. He would shake the bed sheet, fix the foam, spread the sheet on it and remove the wrinkles from the pillow and keep it neatly. He would do this in such a perfect way that not even the slightest wrinkle could be seen on the sheet.

The main reason why he used to do that was because his instructor would check his bed every day and if there was even a slight disturbance on his bed, William would be punished and punishment was so hard. To save himself from punishment, he used to do that daily and gradually he got addicted to doing this. Because of that habit he got great promotions in his life.

In fact, when a person wakes up in the morning and first fixes his bed, he realizes that he has started the day by completing a task in the best possible way. He performs all the tasks that have to be done throughout the day in a perfect way, no matter how difficult they may be, just because of that confidence that he got in the morning after completing his first task. By doing this daily, it develops a discipline in the person and he always tries to perform things in a perfect way.

The Second lesson he taught to the audience was that, one day he did the same as he used to do every day. He set his bed in a beautiful way. Despite this perfect work, he got punishment by his instructor. After Punishment, his instructor came to him and asked; why did you not ask me about today’s punishment as your bed was absolutely fine. Actually I wanted to teach you a lesson that sometimes in your life you do not deserve punishment but you got. So never mind it, forget it and move ahead because life is not always good, sometimes it is bitter. We always focus on our goals so that we can be successful in our life.

To recapitulate, making bed seems a small thing to do in the morning but it changes your life in a tremendous way. In fact, it boosts your confidence and self-confidence is very crucial for success. It will make you punctual, perfect, and disciplined. Moreover, it will mitigate your laziness and eventually you will achieve your desired goals.

Thank you!
