Ocean Acidification is Very Harmful for the Marine Ecosystem!!

Sea acidity refers to the decline in the pH of the ocean over a long period of time, mainly due to the emission of carbon dioxide (Co2) from the atmosphere. For more than 200 years, or since the industrial revolution, the concentration of carbon dioxide (Co2) in the atmosphere has increased due to the burning of fossil fuels and the change in land use. The sea absorbs about 30% of the Co2 emitted in the atmosphere, and as the level of Co2 increases in the atmosphere, so does the sea level.

Causes 

Burning Fossil Fuels

It may not be directly associated with water pollution, but it plays a vital role in the environment change. Produce a lot of carbon dioxide on burning fuels such as petroleum, diesel and coal.

Waste Disposal

Waste disposal has been a challenge for many countries. As far as those concerned with seawater are concerned, they are too quick to use the oceans as a potential dumping ground for domestic and industrial waste. However, as the atmosphere is under the influence of poisonous gasses, seawater is at the disposal of hazardous liquid waste.

More Release of CO2

The acidity in the sea is happening because too much carbon dioxide is emitted into the atmosphere. Carbon dioxide is nothing new, and its presence in a moderate amount is not a matter of concern. However, the speed at which we are pumping it into our environment is a matter of concern. There are two major sources of Co2 in the atmosphere: the emission of fossil fuels and deforestation.

Negative Effects 

The rate at which acidity occurs is the factor determining the extent to which calcifying organisms will be able to adapt. The effects of acidity will increase the food chain to affect economic activities such as fishing, water agriculture and tourism. Wherever Marine calcifying organisms are present, there are hazards from Marine acidity.

Generally, shell-filled animals - including mussels, clams, urchins and starfish - have difficulty creating their own shells in more acidic water like coral. It is expected that by the end of this century, 25 percent and 10 percent less shells will grow in males and sepals respectively. Urchins and starfish are not so studied, but they make their shell like portions from high magnesium calcite, a type of calcium carbonate that dissolves even faster than the aragonite form of calcium carbonate that USES coral This means a weak shell for these animals, which increases the chances of crushing or eating.

Coral rocks provide shelter and food for a large variety of Marine life, including various sponges, oysters, clams, shrimp, starfish, sea urchins, and many types of fish. Coral reefs are among the most biologically diverse and valuable ecosystems on earth. An estimated 25% of all Marine life, including more than 4,000 species of fish, depends on coral reefs at some point in their life span. Sea acidity greatly affects coral reefs.

The most effective way to limit sea acidity is to follow climate change, implement a solution to dramatically reduce fossil fuel use. If we dramatically reduce our global warming emissions, and we limit heat in the future, we can significantly reduce the damage to the Marine ecosystem.
