Cruelty to all animals is a concern as it is wrong to hurt any living thing. Deliberate cruelty is a particular concern as it is a sign of psychological distress and often indicates that an individual has already suffered violence or may suffer ACTS of violence. Animals are left in a house or yard that looks empty. The reports of missing animals and being left to die inside empty buildings or apartment units are dangerously common, and it is a crime to abandon an animal in all 50 states. If you see a neighbor has moved or stopped going to an accommodation where you know animals live, be extra vigilant. Some dogs bark and groan to express their anxiety when left alone, but a dog that cries or barks for several hours is giving a clear indication that it needs immediate, life-saving care.

Dogs and cats are often victims of neglect and physical cruelty, although birds, hamsters, gerbils, rabbits and reptiles are sometimes abused. Most of the victims of animal cruelty are pets, not wild animals. A chain reaction starts in our community when an animal is abused. Not only is an innocent animal injured, but a person who commits a crime often falls into a cycle that can eventually lead to violence against other people. Evidence of the relation between cruelty with animals and violence on human beings is compelling. People who are most indulge in animal cruelty are five times more likely to commit violent crime. Animal abuse, like many other forms of abuse, is about power and control over a helpless victim. By taking action against animal cruelty, we protect animals and expose and prevent additional crimes.

Never ignore wandering animals on the road, where they may suffer from disease, starvation, and human cruelty. Contact your local animal shelter to report the missing animal. Animal shelters and spcas always need help socializing cats and dogs, raising animals, and cleaning cages and pens. If you can't volunteer, send your share.

If you think someone you know is abusing animals, please talk. The best thing you can do is to report your suspicion of abuse or negligence to the appropriate enforcement authorities at your location.
