Proteins are needed in every cell of your body. The many different types of proteins do various important jobs in your body. Some types of proteins form a major part of your bones, hair, skin, and nails. Your sense organs, nerves, and brain would not work without the help of other types of proteins.
When you cut yourself, certain proteins help your blood to clot. Still other types of proteins help you fight illness. Some of the most important proteins are the enzymes. Enzymes are proteins that speed up the rates of chemical reactions within your body.
All living things need enzymes. Without them, most chemical reactions will take place too slowly and organisms will die. Many different enzymes are needed to keep your body working properly .
Proteins can also be used to supply your body cells with energy. For energy, your body first uses any glucose or fatty acid molecules that are available. If none of these molecules are in your food, or stored in your body, then amino acids must be used. Using too many amino acids for energy is not usually good for your body. Amino acid molecules must be available for building the many proteins that your body needs.
Your body cannot store amino acids in a reserve supply, the way it can store glucose and fatty acids. If you eat too many proteins and thus too many amino acids- the oxygen, hydrogen and carbon atoms they contain are converted into fat. However, because nitrogen atoms in the protein are removed when this is done, your body cannot remake amino acids from fat.
The only place amino acids are held in the body is in your body parts - in the proteins that make your muscles, for example. If you don't eat enough protein, your body starts to break down these body parts to obtain the amino acids it needs.
Using amino acids from body parts can lead to illness and even death. You must eat enough carbohydrates and fats to supply your need. Then the proteins you eat can be used to build and repair your growing body.
