Hi guys. I'm here to review the Oscar winning movie 'Good Will Hunting' today. This one released in December 1997, directed by gus van sant(only movie I watched of him). This is star studded movie which casts Matt Damon, Robin Williams and Ben Affleck.
This movie just hits right into your heart. If you're like me, there are some points where you'll compare yourself with the protagonist and you'll find out that he and me aren't so different. You definitely must've suffered things that the protagonist does in the movie. "There are some people, who needs others to believe in them first, to believe in themselves".
Plot
There are basically two tones going on at the same time. Being a Harvard graduate mathematician, you fail to solve problems that your janitor can and yet somehow, you fail to appreciate it properly.
While the janitor is so genius that without any degrees he can solve problems that professors of his college can't and still he can't recognise the his true identity even though people are trying to help him.
Will woks as a janitor at MIT. One day while cleaning the floors, he sees one maths problem on the board. It's for the students to solve. But Will solves it while cleaning the floor. Professor Gerry sees the janitor solving the problem. He calls out his name and asks what was he doing there? To professor's surprise, he solves the problem correctly. Professor being a noble prize winner, he's astonished that even he was not able to solve the problem and a janitor solved it.
Professor wants to help Will recognise his strengths but he keeps running back to people he grew up with. The professor even bails him from jail time so he would reconsider being a good human and pursue mathematics. But he fails to get him on board.
His last hope is Sean. He asks him to give psychological therapy to Will so he comes to his senses. Sean's retired a long time ago because of his wife's death. He agrees to help the kid just because of his friendship with Gerry.
Now, Will is a tough kid. It wasn't going to be easy for Sean to help the kid. He resisted saying he doesn't need any therapy. He's good with his life he's living right now. He even tried to trigger Sean by making him remember the death of his wife. But Sean was not going to give up.
Will starts talking now. He likes a girl named Skylar. He opens up to Sean about her. Meanwhile his friend convinces him to do something useful with his gifts. Don't be in the mess that we are in, he says.
My take
This is the most beautiful movie I've ever seen. Robin Williams is so surreal and it's so emotional and heart touching how he helps Matt Damon recognise who he is.
You'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll love the friendship between Will and his friends. You'll see the struggle of Sean to get Will out of his fears. You'll see the life Skylar wants to live. I'll rate it 8.5 out of 10.
