Humayun Ahmed (13 November 1947–19 July 2012) was a Bangladeshi novelist, short story writer, playwright and lyricist, screenwriter and filmmaker. He is one of the most popular Bengali novelists of the twentieth century. He is considered as one of the best writers after the independence of Bangladesh. He is the father of a new style of dialogue in Bengali fiction. On the other hand, he is the pioneer of modern Bengali science fiction. He is also acclaimed as a drama and film director. The number of his published books is more than three hundred. Some of his books have been translated into many languages of the world, some of them are included in the school-college university curriculum.

After graduating from Dhaka College, he studied Chemistry at Dhaka University and Polymer Chemistry at North Dakota State University. He was a long time professor in the Department of Chemistry, Dhaka University. He later quit teaching in the interests of writing and filmmaking.
He was detained by the Pakistan Army during the Bangladesh War of Liberation in 1971 and shot dead after being tortured. He miraculously survived. [2] Humayun Ahmed's first novel, Nandita Narke, was published in 1972. From this time in the seventies till his death, he was an unrivaled craftsman of Bengali fiction. The popularity of his story-novel in this period was incomparable. His created Himu and Missy Ali and Shuvro characters have deeply overwhelmed the youth of Bangladesh. Science fiction is also one of his creations, the first science fiction he wrote is Love for You. His television dramas gained popularity. Although not in large numbers, his songs also gained popularity. One of his novels is Madhyahna, Jochna and Janani's story, Matal Hawa, Lilabati, Kabi, Badshah Namdar etc. He was awarded the Bangla Academy Sahitya Puraskar in 1971 by the Bangla Academy for his outstanding contribution to the field of novels in Bengali literature. Besides, for his contribution to Bengali language and literature, the government of Bangladesh awarded him the Ekushey Padak in 1994, the second highest civilian honor in the country.
His films are widely acclaimed. In 1994, his first film, Parashamani, was released on the basis of Bangladesh's war of independence. The film won eight awards, including the National Film Award for Best Picture. His other acclaimed films are Shravan Megher Din (1999), Dui Duari (2000), Shyamal Chhaya (2004), and Ghetu Putra Kamala (2012). Shyamal Chhaya and Ghetu Putra Kamala were both nominated for Oscars in the Foreign Language Film category from Bangladesh.
