Never Go Back To Your Past, No Matter How Promising It Looks.
Hey bro! We have a birthday party we want to attend, why not join us since it's the weekend , he said. I had little to study so I accepted the invitation. Everyone was all paired except myself and Angela. Maybe fate made it that way or was I too dumb to put it on fate. My friends signaled me to take a bold step as a guy and talk things with her. I was feeling uneasy because all I have ever talked to were my family members and male friends. I was shy and it wasn't at the party I was about to let my guard down.
Angela was prettier than the morning sun in Paris, she had a pair of lovely eyes that glittered in the dark. She was the true definition of beauty. Mike walked up to me, "Hey Mario! Be a man and go get your girl. He handed me a glass of drink which I hurriedly gulped down. Was I under the influence of what I drank, I don't even know but all I knew I was able to go to her.
" hi, it's Mario, what makes a pretty damsel stay alone'. It's not a crime to be alone, is it, she replied with a smile. Oh my! My heart skipped a beat and I thought I was going to die. "How did you do that? I asked. What? She replied. How did you slow down my heart rate with just your smile? I don't know, I think you are just here to flirt with me, which doesn't go well with me right now. She said, her sparkling eyes became teary.
" If you really want to know why I'm all alone, I will suggest we talk outside, '' she finally said. At that point, I knew something was disturbing her but how was I to know. I signaled my friends as I stepped out with her. They gave me the thumbs up sign and once in my life aside from studies I was happy with myself. "I came here to cool my head off, I had another fight with my boyfriend" she suddenly stopped. Why are you interested in knowing this? Can we enjoy the moment and forget about what brought me to the party? She pleaded. But "But what! I said with all seriousness. I just broke up with him, a few minutes ago before we began talking, she added.
Why didn't you bring your girlfriend to the party, are you a flirt like my ex? I shook my head and told her, I haven't been in a relationship before. It was difficult to believe that today was the first time trying to get a girl for myself. She brought her phone and played a song by "when you lose someone - Nina Nesbitt" . I felt her pains and I had to offer her a shoulder to lean on.
I helped her up and we walked inside the party again. Everyone was all seated and we became celebrities overnight. She held my hands as if we had been together all our lives. I had these butterfly feelings in my belly and I knew I was in love. It's weird how the heart decides whom it falls for and I knew he chose Angela. We talked about a lot of things and her mood lightened with my jokes. The party came to an end and we exchanged our contacts. I felt the urge to be with her against all odds.
Days passed and the bond grew stronger, I felt I was becoming more connected to her than studies. I forgot to mention, she was in her penultimate class in Law school. So it was easier for her to sneak out and we went places. I had fun, to the detriment of my studies and I didn't care what happened. I just wanted to enjoy all that I had read about in books and seen in movies. Maybe I wasn't wrong because I wasn't the first who felt that way. Remember, curiosity killed the cat. All the times we had been together were memorable. She introduced me to her friends, relatives and even colleagues, I felt I was the one but yeah! I was the one.
Love is a beautiful thing and I am happy I experienced it. "Hey Mario! There is something we need to talk about" was the message that popped up in my notification bar. It was a chat from her and I knew I was in for a long thing. My place or yours, I replied. At the bar where we first met by 6pm, would that be possible? Okay!. I went home bothered about studies and what she had to tell me. Her behaviour lately wasn't too nice but I thought it was just school stress so I was okay with it.
I walked into the bar, there she was with a guy I suspected was her ex, hello, Mario! She waved. My legs were too heavy to carry me to where she was. I walked up to them, I shook hands with Stanley, her supposed ex. I spread my arms to hug her but all I got was a hand shake. I noticed something, the glittering stuff but this time around, it wasn't her eyes that sparkled. It was the piece of metal worn in her finger. Could it be a joke, was it a dream, what is happening here. My eyes became cloudy once again, why do good guys have to pay while the bad ones go free. Hello Mario, I snapped out of my busy head. I was ready to chest whatever she was going to throw at me.
" This is my Fiance, Mario. I was so excited, I lifted my face so her ex could look at the face of the man who was introduced to him. I was confused, she was pointing at him and not me. But, I thought… my name is Stanley, thank you for all the times you stood by my fiancee, he interrupted. I couldn't believe my ears. I smiled, it's nothing bro, my name is Mario. She explained how he apologized to her and she had no choice but to go back, since he was her first love. I nodded my head as if I understood everything but deep down I was trying to fight back tears. I never wanted her to see me cry. She told me about the proposal. I walked home listening to the song she first played that night at the bar, "When You Lose Someone by Nina Nesbitt". It was the longest night of my life, I couldn't breathe well at some point but then I had to move on. The fact I lost her to someone who never cared about her wellbeing was what disturbed me most.
It was painful but I needed to focus on my studies, no distractions anymore I was done with anything called love. Ten years later, I met her at the mall with her kids. Maybe she didn't see me or was trying to hide the scars on her face from me, hey Angela! She turned and suddenly bursted into tears.
I quietly walked away, it would be wrong to console another man's wife.
