Music classes with children with autism
Children begin to learn as soon as they are born. Everything around them is new and the brain gradually registers and stores everything it sees and everything it interacts with.
Children are really wonderful, each one learns in a unique way, they learn fast, they don't see difficulties in learning and according to their progress each one will start to develop different tastes about the things around him/her.
I am currently working in a music academy with children, where I attend children with Autism or children with "super powers" as my boss says, I am also working with many other cases such as Asperger. This time I want to talk a little bit about autism in music classes.
Before I start, I want to tell you that my boss always says that all children develop their own super powers, but that children with autism develop those super powers faster than other children.
Why does this happen?
Although autistic children often have deficits in interaction with other people or problems with communication, art for them is a help to improve their ability to concentrate, emotions and affective development, being this medium a way to free themselves from the different ways they have to learn. Art stimulates intelligence and helps develop creativity.
My boss is a psychologist, and he says that children with autism develop more superpowers because they are much more creative than other children. They see the world in a different way, that also makes them advance very fast in the arts, especially in music, they do not see many obstacles when it comes to playing or singing a song they like, they also have a great memory, when they learn a song it is difficult for them to forget it.
Children with autism often have some behavioral problems when they have some strong change in their life, because they are a little rigid in terms of their routines, when you change the routine of their day they usually get upset or get into a bad mood due to the lack of understanding of what is happening in their environment.
How does music help children with autism?
Music develops creativity in them through games, different sounds and the creations they can make while singing or playing.
Although they are inflexible when they have a change in their routine, music can often help them tolerate that change because they can express their feelings or concerns.
When the child is playing music, their brain creates different connections that are associated with playing something they like, making them less anxious and able to enjoy what they are doing.
As music works as a means of expression and communication, the child gradually and without realizing it, begins to develop better in their social environment and develops a better ability to show their emotions.
It helps to improve the motor skills in his fingers and perceptions of what he is doing while playing an instrument, he also begins to concentrate better on what he is doing.
Music motivates children to establish relationships or interactions with their environment by sharing and teaching what they know how to do.
