What Christians claimed was that it was a church at first, so they had a right to Haya Sophia. And the Muslims claimed - for many years it was a mosque, so it will be Haya Sophia.
The Greek word haya means holy, sofia means knowledge. It is the third highest place for Christians after Jerusalem, the Temple Mount. Haya Sophia stands with a history of about 1500 years. Sometimes church, sometimes mosque, sometimes museum; Sometimes Roman, sometimes Ottoman, present-day Turkey; The ancient era, the Middle Ages, the modern era, as if the only witness to the history and heritage of the world.
The present site was built in 538 AD by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian I. From 536-1204 it was used as an Orthodox church, then from 1204 to 1261 it was a Catholic church, and from 1281 to 1453 it was an Orthodox church. When the Ottomans conquered Constantinople in 1453, the Ottoman Sultan Muhammad II turned it into a mosque. Many of the church's monuments, the Imperial Mosque, which was the main mosque in Turkey until 1817, were removed. Then, in 1935, the father of modern Turkey, Mostafa Kemal Atatর্কrk, transformed Haya Sophia into a museum. It was once again turned into a mosque by the hands of Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
In 1975, UNESCO inscribed Haya Sophia on the World Heritage List. Every year 36 lakh visitors come to see this beautiful, picturesque and ancient installation.
