International Mother Language Day
Introduction: Mother tongue is the main component of nationality. Our mother tongue is Bengali. We have had to fight and give our lives for the freedom to speak this language. We had to give our first blood for the language on 21st February 1952. In November 1999, the General Assembly of UNESCO declared the 21st of February as the International Language Day.
Background: Bangladesh is the only country in the world that has given its life for its mother tongue. Pakistan gained independence on 14 August 1947. Shortly after independence, the Pakistani government took the initiative to make Urdu the state language. At a conference in 1947, a proposal was made to make Urdu the state language of Pakistan. But still most people in Pakistan speak Bengali. In view of this, the first demonstration was held on 11 March 1948 in East Bengal demanding language. Sheikh Mujib was arrested. Therefore, March 11 was then celebrated as "Language Day". On 21 March 1947, the Governor of Pakistan declared Urdu as the only state language of Pakistan. Immediately there is protest. On March 24, 1948, it was again declared that "Urdu should be the medium of instruction in Pakistan". From then on the movement of great protest started. Seeing the bad situation, on 14 February 1952, section 144 was declared in the whole of Dhaka. But on 21 February 1952 a meeting-procession started at the office of Dhaka University. In violation of section 144, when meetings and processions were filled with processions, shots were fired and Salam, Rafiq, Jabbar, Barkat, Shafiur and many others were martyred. It was in this context that the All-Party State Language Council, headed by Maulana Bhasani, decided to observe "Language Day" on 21 February 1952.
Initiator of Recognition: The Mother Language Of The World, an organization of expatriate Bengalis in Canada, was the first to take such an initiative. But on the advice of the United Nations, they requested the Ministry of Education of Bangladesh to take such an initiative. After receiving the approval of the Prime Minister, the formal proposal was sent to the UNESCO headquarters on 9 September 1999. At the UNESCO General Assembly on 27 October 1999, the Minister of Education raised the issue of declaring 21st February as 'International Mother Language Day'. The proposal was supported by 28 countries. On 16 November 1999, the 31st Conference of UNESCO recognized the observance of "February 21" as "International Mart Language Day". Today, the Bengali language has been recognized as the sweetest in the world.
