"A rose by any other name would smell as sweet"

Understandably, roses have a place of honor long ago. There are many stories about this rose in different parts of the world.

This red rose is heard in Roman and Greek mythology. It is said that the red rose was born after the soil was soaked with the tears of Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and the blood of her lover, Adenis. This flower is also associated with Mother Mary.

In Hinduism, Lord Vishnu created his wife Lakshmi with 1006 small rose petals and 108 large roses. Since then the red rose has been a symbol of love.

There is an Arabic story that a cuckoo bird sees a white rose and becomes a fan of it and starts singing. The thorns of that rose pierced his chest and blood came out of his heart and the white rose turned red.

Since then, poets, writers and artists have been using the red rose as a symbol of love for a long time. A few lines from Robert Burns' poem A Red, Red Rose

o My Love is like a red, red rose

  • That’s newly sprung in June;

  • O my Love is like the melody

  • That’s sweetly played in tune.
