WHY DO WE WORK?

You are not working because you only love what you do. That narrative is plain nonsense. I'm not saying that you don't love what you do, but that love is not the sole motivation for why you love what you do. Studies show that MOST people work because of MONEY/REMUNERATION. It's why young people change jobs twice or more in 5 years (older generations don't like switching employers). In a capitalist society, money is the primary motivation, and other things are secondary. If you buy into only I-love-what-I-do narrative, someone else is cashing out the products of your sweat. Corporations are created to make PROFITS: As a worker, don't just love what you do, share in that prosperity. Organizational psychologists have affirmed this narrative in multiple studies, so don't fight me on this. Do your research. Unless you have other objectives, this new year, if your employer is not paying you well, and another employer is willing to pay you more, WALK AWAY. This message applies to the author of this post, too. As Studs Terkel put it: "Work is about a search for daily meaning as well as daily bread, for recognition as well as cash, for astonishment rather than torpor." Keep taking affirmative steps.
