The initiative of the local people to build a floating bridge using local technology at Jhampa Baore in Rajganj area of Monirampur upazila of Jessore is really worth following.
According to a report published in Prothom Alo on Wednesday, a 1,000-foot-long and 6-foot-wide floating bridge has been built at the initiative of 60 members of a social organization called Jhampa Village Development Foundation and their savings. Using local technology, the bridge was built with 600 plastic drums, 600 ounces of iron angles and 250 iron sheets at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. The bridge has been constructed to facilitate the movement of people in nine villages around Jhampa Baor. For so long the people of these villages had to rely on boats to cross the left bank. For this they have suffered a lot. There have also been casualties in boat accidents. The construction of the bridge put an end to their misery.
This initiative of Jhampa Village Development Foundation deserves praise. We congratulate them for this. Others may follow them. It is often seen in our villages that people are suffering due to lack of a bridge or people are having difficulty in moving due to broken roads. Most of the time we have to depend on the institutions in charge of the government. But it is often seen that roads or bridges are not being repaired in many places due to negligence of government agencies. In these cases, if bridges or roads could be repaired on their own initiative, the suffering of many people would be reduced.
In November last year, residents of the East Jurain area of the capital, without relying on government authorities, took the initiative to remove the dirt from the sewers and free the entire area from waterlogging. Many big problems are being solved in different parts of the country through such local initiatives. But the government must keep in mind that it is their responsibility to ensure the well-being of the people.
I am proud because this floating bridge is located in my upazila. It has been named as 2nd Bangabandhu Bridge. This floating bridge is located on Jhapa Baor. The bridge was built by local youths. Many visitors come here every day. Thank you for share this article.
