Virginians: Consider Voting for Justin Fairfax Today!
Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax has had his career pretty much completely destroyed by unsubstantiated accusations from two women who accuse him of sexually assaulting them 15-20 years ago. They never came forward until he was about to run for governor, and have presented no evidence. Fairfax called for an investigation into himself he was so confident there was no evidence, but neither of the women wanted to cooperate with it. However, his career has still been destroyed despite no evidence.
Many people have compared his career being destroyed with no evidence to how black men historically were lynched or run out of town in the South based on totally unsubstantiated claims that they were annoying white women.
Still, Fairfax is running for governor of Virginia today in the Democratic Primary. He is unlikely to win, but if you can, consider voting for him. I believe the better he does the more hope men fighting totally unsubstantiated claims have in the future.
Quick thought: Why do all these right-wing websites keep so much information on their users? Seems like every other week I hear about some forum or alternative social media site being hacked and the user data getting leaked. You all have to know you are targets for hacking and politically-motivated attacks right? So why keep so much irl data. Users should have plausible deniability about being involved with these sites/forums.

Trump Supporters have stormed the United States Capitol in an effort to stop the Electoral votes from being counted. I will definitely write more about this later, but I wanted to get something out about this immediately as it is happening.
This is just pathetic and counter-productive. It wont work to change the result. It also just serves to make the entire American Right-Wing look like they are authoritarians who oppose Democracy. One of my main criticisms of AntiFa from the Left has been that they are counter-productive. This is more counter-productive than anything AntiFa has ever done.

Now is the Time to Eliminate SJW College Courses
As universities face budget cuts, this is the perfect time to defund inaccurate, unscientific, and biased courses and departments. Unfortunately, due to the current global pandemic and recession, universities have seen much of their expected funding dry up. In fact, many of these universities are now facing tough decisions on what departments, classes, and professors to cut. There have long been certain departments, classes, and professors in colleges and universities that exist to promote unscientific ideas backed by poor scholarship. These should have been limited before, but now that budget cuts are becoming increasingly necessary, this is the time to cut them, thus saving money while improving the quality of our higher education system.
Let's be clear - this is not about censorship. These people have a right to their opinions. What they do not have a right to is university funding. SJWs have no more right to university funding than the alt-right would have. This article calls for universities to voluntarily defund certain programs. Left-Wing and politically correct speakers should still be invited to campus and allowed to speak to those students who wish to hear them. Freedom of speech is not up for debate here, but public funding to promote unscientific political views is.
So what programs and classes am I talking about specifically, and what is the problem with them? I am going to be using standards similar to those of the "Sokal Squared" academic study from several years ago (more on Sokal Squared later). This means that my SJW studies departments - which they called "Grievance Studies" - will consist of Fat Acceptance movement, Gender Studies, most Sexuality Studies, Queer Studies, Racial Studies, and most Cultural Studies programs and academic journals.
So how to I justify wanting to defund these fields of study and university classes? Is it just because I personally disagree with them? Is it out of some feeling of being offended or personally attacked? To the contrary, let me try to provide solid evidence that these are not legitimate academic fields, and their so-called scholarship is of very low quality.
The famous Sokal Squared study, also called the Grievance Studies Affair, in 2018 shed light on just how low the standards are in this field. I wont go too in-depth about it here, since it was absolutely worth its own article, which I wrote right here. However, as a brief overview, a group of real academics and professors submitted made-up studies to real journals in the SJW/Grievance Studies fields I mentioned above. These made up studies with horrible methodology were frequently accepted by those journals. The highlight of this was an article that quoted Hitler's Mein Kampf, but changed references to "Jews" to " white men", and Hitler's advocacy for "Nazism" to "Feminism" or "Privilege". This journal was accepted for publication by *Affilia,* one of the most prestigious feminist journals for the past 30 years! Without revealing too much about myself, I will say that I have engaged in some research and publication of academic articles in my own career. I have a solid grasp on methodology and proper standards for publications. Unsurprisingly, I have seen a lot of low quality "scholarship" from the Grievance/SJW Studies fields. In one example, a published feminist studies thesis on whether men get paid less for defying gender stereotypes by going into traditionally female fields had a sample size of 14. The author had trouble getting participants, and so relied on contacting some of her friends for the study. If I recall correctly only about half of those participants were people she did not know personally. Obviously, this sample size is pathetic, and her friends may have simply been telling her what she wanted to hear, since they likely know her politics and opinions. This worthless study was published.
In another instance, a Gender Studies paper was published on whether women felt that Feminism had enabled them to question religion more freely. None of the women in the study agreed with the authors, so the authors simply concluded that these women "lacked awareness" of how Feminism had helped them. In other words, if the women had agreed with the authors, the authors would say it proved they were correct, and if the women disagreed with the authors, then the authors were still correct - the women in the study just did not know it. Obviously this is a worthless study that only serves as a way for the authors to pretend their opinions are fact.
Students may choose to study things out of personal interest, of course, but universities should care about whether they are producing graduates with valuable skills and knowledge who will be able to earn a living. Those who go into Gender Studies and similar fields tend to only have a skillset - which is more being able to espouse the accepted opinions - that is only relevant to perpetuating that same field. Many do end up making a decent living, but only because they go on to get other degrees that they actually use for a job, for example as teachers. In this case I question the value of the actual Gender Studies degree, and would argue that the type of people who go after this degree tend to already be well-off, as they are able to get graduate degrees to actually earn money. The Gender Studies degree itself is not very valuable.
Based on the United States Government's Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average college graduate with a Bachelor's degree earns about $65,000 a year. In contrast, a Bachelor's in Gender Studies will get a graduate on average under $51,000 a year. There is a worth to degrees other than money, but I have already made the case that these graduates have also not developed research and critical thinking skills. https://www.bls.gov/emp/chart-unemployment-earnings-education.htm
Although there is plenty more to say, this is not an academic article, but merely a blog post, so let me wrap this up. Grievance/SJW Studies fields are academically lacking, absurdly politicalized, intellectually dishonest, fail to promote critical thinking skill, do not provide graduates with useful skills, and do not put graduates in a good position to make a living. They have not deserved university support for a long time, but now that cuts will have to be made, these programs should be first on the chopping block.
On account of the above evidence, I recommend that those of us who are alumni, donors, students, or otherwise associated with a college or university, urge the administration of that school to cut back on these biased and academically lacking disciplines. Emails, letters, phone calls, and in-person conversations are all great ways to get involved. Biden Wins U.S. Presidential Election (And my Prediction was Close!)
According to all major media outlets and results reported by individual states, Joe Biden defeated Donald Trump to become the next president of the United States.
Around 80% of the United States has clearly accepted this result. Currently the winner in every state has been declared by the Associated Press and the New York Times - although at least one is headed to a recount. The state of Georgia, where Biden won by about 0.25%, has already begun its recount, and the Trump campaign may try to get Arizona and Wisconsin to conduct recounts as well.
As some of my readers may know, the United States President is not selected by the popular vote, but rather by a system called the "Electoral College". In this system every state gets two Electoral College votes based on their senators, and then a number of electoral college votes based on how many members of the House of Representatives they have, which is based on population. The total number of Electoral votes per state ranges from 3-55. There have 538 total Electoral Votes, so a candidates needs 270 to win the election. The popular vote winner in each of those states gets all of the electoral votes from that state (*two states do this a little differently, but if you are not familiar with the electoral system in the United States don't worry about them). Based on current results Biden won 306 Electoral votes to Trump's 232.
The state of Georgia, worth 16 electoral votes, will conduct a recount, but Biden is expected to win. It was originally thought that Pennsylvania, worth 20 electoral votes, Nevada, worth six, and Michigan, worth 16, might have recounts. However, it now appears that Biden will win by a large enough margin that a recount will not be allowed in any of those states.
Arizona and Wisconsin still may or may not have recounts, depending on the final margins there. However, Biden leads in all of those states, and it would be shocking if a recount reversed even one of the results. Even if Trump reversed two of those results Biden would still win.
No state-level result has been reversed by a recount in a Presidential election in United States history, so essentially it is safe to say that Biden has won by a decent margin. Biden has also won the national popular vote by about 4-5%, with some votes still to be counted.
Despite this, Trump still refuses to accept the result, with some of his most die-hard supporters claiming massive election fraud, mostly based on how the results became more Democratic as the night went on. Cities have more votes than rural areas, so it takes them longer to count the votes and report results, and these cities tend to vote heavily for Democrats. This normally causes results to become more Democratic as the night goes on. In this election many votes chose to vote by mail due to the Coronavirus, while Donald Trump specifically told his supporters to vote in-person instead. Therefore, it is unsurprising that the mail-in ballots, which in most states were counted after votes cast in-person, went heavily Democratic. This was all expected for months ahead of time, but has still led to some conspiracy theories.
Trump's campaign has brought many legal challenges to the results in several states, but it seems that no court is taking them very seriously. Most of the evidence presented has been from Republican sources and low-level election staff claiming some level of fraud. The man who made one of the most widely-cited of these allegations has now admitted that he was not telling the truth. Others have not yet been substantiated or disproven in court. I am very proud of how much of this prediction came true! I got the number of electoral votes exactly correct, although it happened a little differently than I expected. I predicted that Trump would win Georgia and Biden would win North Carolina, while the opposite actually happened. I also predicted that Biden would win all of Maine's electoral votes, but Trump won one of them (Maine is very unusual in that they are one of two states that can split their electoral votes. In the other 48 states the winner gets all of the electoral votes from that state.) Overall this was pretty close!
Overall the result of this election appears clear, and it seems that the transition to a Biden administration will only experience a little turmoil due to Trump refusing the concede.

The 2020 U.S. Presidential Election Prediction!
This is a really hard election to predict, but this map is my prediction for the final result of the 2020 U.S. Presidential Election.
The biggest question is whether the early/mail-in voting will significantly change things. My map above is basically based only on the polls and the idea that some states will start to revert back to how they normally vote. However, the early voting could change that significantly. If so it is hard to know who it would benefit most, but I would guess it might benefit Democrats because they are more likely to want to vote early. Traditionally Democratic groups, like younger people and racial minorities, are also known to vote less often than older and white people. Democrats may be able to take advantage of early voting to narrow that gap in turnout.
This is a pretty clear, but not overwhelming, victory for Biden. Based on polls it seems like the Coronavirus response and worsening economy have brought Trump down. Biden is also generally more well-liked than Trump, although Trump might be seen as stronger. Both candidates are dogged by concerns about their age. Based on most polls the debates slightly helped Biden. The issue of the Supreme Court has motivated Democratic turnout after Trump replaced a popular liberal judge, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, with a Conservative. This has given conservatives a majority on the court for probably at least 25 years, but may cost some Republicans their elections.
There are also a number of states here that could go either way. Of the Trump states: Florida, Georgia, Ohio, and Iowa could go for Biden without it being too surprising. However, all of those went for Trump by solid margins in 2016, and I think some voters there will go back to how they normally vote. Of the Biden states: Arizona, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and Michigan could definitely go for Trump. Arizona and North Carolina are normally Republican, but Biden has been polling well in both for weeks. Wisconsin and Michigan are normally Democratic, and Biden leads in polls in both, but Trump surprised everyone by winning them both in 2016. Pennsylvania is more of a stretch, as polls there show Biden up by higher margins.
This election could go either way, and it's unlikely to be a very one-sided result, but I think Biden is definitely the favorite to win. There is also a question about when we will actually find out the results, since the mail-in ballots could take a long time to count. It may be several days until we know the final results. This may lead to an early Republican lead that turns into a Democratic victory as more of those ballots are counted. Hopefully, whatever the result is, it is clear enough that both sides have to accept it without any violence.

Horrible Attack in France
As many of you all already know, a week or so ago a teacher was beheaded for insulting Islam in the eyes of some Muslims in France. Today, there were two other attacks, one on a Church that killed two people. The attackers all yelled "Allahu Akbar". I am now hearing rumors that there were even more attacks that were foiled today. This event is so recent that a lot of new information is coming out every hour, so this story is just based on what I could find as I was writing this article. Here are my thoughts on what is going on:
This is a hate crime and anti-freedom of speech. The Christians in their church have a right to believe the way they do, and targeting them just based on religion is a hate crime. This needs to stop, and it's clear that stronger measures must be taken. I do not know what measures these may be, but I fear this conflict is only going to escalate more as time goes on. This is especially true as more information comes out and we learn more about who these attackers were and who they might have worked with.
Unfortunately, these attacks have been going on for a while, and do not seem likely to stop anytime soon. There is a group of people who just do not handle it well when people disagree with them or make fun of them. Taking offence is one thing, but taking lives is another.
I have no love for any sort of Conservative or Fundamentalist religious views, but this is an especially bad problem. I am not sure what the solution will be, but people are going to get very tired of this very quickly. It is hard for me to imagine that this will not lead to a massive backlash on a political, personal, and social level. I am sure it will even have international ramifications as citizens in other countries see what has been happening in France and begin to fear that they will end up having some of the same problems. Still, today my heart goes out to the French people.

The Failure of Intersectionality - Divided 1,000 Ways
Intersectionality is all the rage in politics these days, and has even caught on in academia. The idea of intersectionality is that to truly understand injustice you have to focus on multiple identities at the same time. That is because these identities "intersect" and create uniquely oppressed people. For example, a black woman in the United States as unique problems that neither a white woman or black man have. You can't just combine the "woman" problems that the white woman has and the "black" problems the black man has to understand a black woman's experience. Those identities combine to create unique issues for her. This idea originated long ago, but until recently was only popular in more left-wing academic spaces at universities. It became more popular through Tumblr and similar sites in the early 2010s. This article was inspired by a poster at my school stressing the need to be aware specifically of black, transgender, working class, undocumented activists.
The purpose of this article is not to disprove the whole theory of intersectionality, but rather to express my deep frustration at how it is used in political movements. These days it seems like every left-leaning political movement in the United States has to be intersectional - it has to address all injustices. You can't have a gay rights movement - you have to add black lives matter on to the flag. You can't have a disabilities rights movements, it has to include the unique issues of gay disabled people. And you CERTAINLY can't have a movement for working class people that doesn't focus just as much on Black Lives Matter and Immigrant rights as class.
To be clear, I consider myself to be left-leaning, possibly even left-wing in some of my views. I know that black people in the United States face discrimination, especially at the hands of the police. I support gay marriage, non-discrimination projects, and the right to adopt. I support a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants if they pay a fine, pass a background check, and have to wait as long as legal immigrants to get citizenship. I support universal healthcare and a living wage. I'm no Conservative, but I also see the pitfalls of intersectionality for all of the movements I support.
The problem comes when somebody doesn't support one part of your intersectional movement that targets every issue at once. For example, I'd be happy to join a march in favor of universal healthcare, but I would never join one in favor of abolishing the police. If you are marching for both together, I would not join. In the United States there are many working class people who do not support immigration or the black lives matter movement. There are many rich gay people who do not support socialist policies. Every time you add another identity issue to your movement, you are dividing the number of people who might support you. You are weakening your movement until it only appeals to the proverbial least privileged person on Earth.
The below graph proves my point. The red circle I have added in the middle show the only people who would support such a movement.
They might agree with a movement on three or four of those issues, but they would never support it because of the other issues. This leads to a broken movement with so little popular support it can never get anywhere.
The solution to this is simple - accept that it is alright for movements to just focus on one issue. Not everything has to be about everyone. It's alright to just have a gay rights movement, or a civil rights movement, or a worker's rights movement. In fact, that's probably the only way to really get things done. If you try to include every struggle, your movements will die divided 1,000 ways.

Absurd - Protesters Topple Abe Lincoln Statue in Portland
Yesterday I saw a story that made my blood boil, and embarrassed me to no end. Antifa protesters in Portland toppled a statue of Abraham Lincoln and a statue of Theodore Roosevelt.

Just to give some context to my international readers who may not know, Abraham Lincoln is best known as the president who freed the slaves in the American South, where slavery based on race led many Black people to be chattel slaves for life. Their children were automatically born into slavery as well. He did this in the context of winning the American Civil War, which set a precedent that states can not just leave the United States if they are unhappy with the government.
Theodore Roosevelt is best known for his environmental protection efforts, founding national parks, and forming agencies to ensure that food and drugs were regulated and safe for human consumption in the United States.
Both of these presidents are incredibly popular. A poll showed Lincoln with a stunning 92% approval rating, making him the second most popular president after George Washington himself. That poll showed Theodore Roosevelt as the fourth most popular president, with an 84% approval rating. Both are consistently ranked by historians as among the best presidents in American history, and sometimes as the best.
The above picture is a Mt. Rushmore, one of the most important national monuments in the United States. It shows, from Left to Right, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln.
Only an absolute fool would pick these presidents as the ones to stand against. It just destroys the popularity of any political movement to oppose them. Not only were they genuinely great presidents, but they are so popular nobody should oppose them for pragmatic reasons if they want their movement to be popular.
Unfortunately for the Left, these protesters in Portland, Oregon, did just that. The justification that I have seen is that neither of them was great for Native Americans.
Lincoln was president in the 1860s, and Roosevelt in the 1910s. Unfortunately, both of those times were very racist. At some point Americans need to accept that people are imperfect, and to a degree the product of their times. For example, every U.S. president before Obama opposed gay marriage and supported homophobic policies. Should we say that no president before Obama should be respected? If our country is to stand strong and united we need some figures we can pretty much all stand by. We must accept imperfection. I'm sure in 100 years people will believe that every person reading this article took immoral stances. Society and values change.
The vast majority of black people and Native Americans approve of both of these presidents, so I don't know who these protesters think they are speaking for or defending. They are basically speaking over actual people of color, which ironically is something they claim to oppose.
This is an embarrassment for the entire political Left in the United States, although clearly these protesters represent only a small portion of the Left. However, all of us should be denouncing these idiotic actions.

College Fraternities, Vandalism, and Social Justice
At my school there is a campaign amongst some students to ban Greek Life, or at the very least male fraternities, from campus. This is not only happening at one or two schools - at this point it is a national movement and news stories can be found of bills in state legislatures, student assembly decisions, and vandalism all in the name of removing the scourge of Greek Life from American higher education.
This article is inspired primarily by two recent events. First, there was a campaign at Harvard to ban "single-sex organizations", which I view as sort of an opening volley in this debate. Second, at my school there have been numerous instances of vandalism against fraternities, and certain activists defending that vandalism.
The justification for these actions and proposed bans is that fraternities are havens for crime - in particular, drug use, alcohol use, and sexual assault. As for drug use, I could (and will...) write an entire article about why drug legalization is a much better policy than throwing people in jail for decades for only hurting themselves. For now I'll just say that prison almost always hurts a person much more than drug use does, especially for drugs like marijuana. When it comes to alcohol, drinking happens everywhere, not just in fraternities or sororities. Alcohol is so easily obtainable in college that there no real way to stop it. People will just go off campus, drink in their rooms with friends, drink in common rooms with friends, or even find rooms in academic buildings to drink with friends. I have seen this all happen despite the fact that alcohol is illegal in the US for anyone under the age of 21 (the drinking age should be lowered to 19 in my opinion, but that is yet another article). Sexual assault is a horrible crime, but there is evidence that it is actually *less* common on College campuses than in society as a whole. As with most crimes, the solution is education about why it is wrong, prosecuting those who commit the crime anyway, and trying to help people protect themselves with report systems and emergency numbers. If rapists are in a group they would almost certainly be rapists regardless of the group they are part of. It is rare that a group can make a rapist out of somebody who had been pure of heart before they joined.
From any sort of vaguely pragmatic view banning fraternities makes no sense whatsoever. First off, unless an authoritarian government comes in to ban social fraternities in the US as a whole, banning fraternities from a university only forces them off campus. At many Colleges, this will lead them to essentially (or even literally) move across the street from campus. At my school there is a house used every weekend for fraternity parties that is literally connected to our campus by a crosswalk. So what has been accomplished in that case? All that will happen is that now the campus police and University Conduct Code will have no control over what happens there. If anything, it puts people at more risk.
The idea of banning fraternities is based on the odd assumption that reforming them is impossible. This goes back to an old debate - "Reform or Revolution?". I for one am firmly in the reform camp. The fact that many radicals on college campuses, including Anarchists, Communists, and SJWs, are in favor of banning them entirely illustrates this conflict. Some of these activists add identity politics to the mix, only advocating for banning the traditionally/majority white fraternities. Although there are times when revolution or abolition of groups may be necessary - the French and American Revolutions come to mind - that should only be the case when efforts for reform are entirely suppressed. For example if political speech is banned or otherwise violently suppressed.
When it comes to things like a fraternity though, reform is clearly the better option. Is there anything inherently evil about a group of people getting together and bonding over shared values or holding parties? I would hope we all agree that there is not. Given that there is no *inherent* problem with fraternal organizations, abolishing them is unjust. Not to mention, reform almost always has a significantly higher chance of success than trying to totally overthrow a system.
The problem of some specific groups having toxic cultures and tendencies should be solved by addressing the actual problems, not banning the groups as a whole. For example, universities can ban hazing and create rules, regulations, and punishments to ensure that changes actually take place. If a specific organization has a cultural problem, than that particular one could be sanctioned or banned. Ironically an all-out ban would lead to these groups simply gathering informally and/or at a different location where such rules, regulations, and punishments would not apply.
These are just some quick thoughts on this issue for tonight and it is quite likely that I will revisit this issue when some new scandal arises. Ultimately, I believe that most of the people who want to ban fraternities have their hearts in the right place, but very few actually understand the consequences of such actions and how the problems they see in fraternity culture would simply continue despite any ban. I think it is also worth mentioning that these bans and reforms are often suggested by people who have no understanding of the varied types of Greek Life, including music, social, honor, and services fraternities. Let's also not forget false scandals at Fraternities like the thoroughly debunked UVA Rape Scandal. Finally, some people only want to ban male fraternities, indicating a degree of hostility towards traditionally masculine behaving males, and seem to ignore issues that might be more unique to sororities. Greek Life should not be banned - it just doesn't solve the actual problems.

Why do Conspiracy Theorists Ignore Real Conspiracies?
In the age of Covid and Trump there are conspiracy theories everywhere. Don't get me wrong, I know they have been around for a long time, but it seems like they are especially common right now. What I can't stand is when people buy into crazy conspiracy theories and seem to miss the ones happening openly right in front of us.
The Panama Papers revealed that there is an organized group of the ultra-rich throughout the world who work together to move their assets to certain bank accounts to avoid paying taxes. Taxes that would allow their home countries to better fund schools, roads, social programs, etc. We also know that the rich bias tax codes to the point where many of them barely have to pay anything, even in their home countries! They do this by donating huge amounts to political campaigns.
Look at how Trump only paid $750 in taxes over the past few years, despite at least claiming to be incredibly rich. However, it is true that he did not break the law to do that. The law is just so corrupt that he, and other rich people, can get away with paying a fraction of what the average teacher or nurse pays.
At least the Epstein pedo-island is getting attention, but I still can't help but wonder why there has been no accountability for those who went there. Actually, I don't wonder at all. They run the system, so of course the system doesn't really punish them.
**Daphne Anne Caruana Galizia,** the anti-corruption activist and reporter who revealed the Panama Papers story, was killed by a car bomb shortly after revealing these documents. Again, like with Epstein's murder, it was obvious what happened. And yet, nobody will be held accountable who was really behind it. It is all a mess, and it's all out in the open.
What I really can't stand though are the people who believe all kinds of random conspiracy theories with no evidence behind them, and yet ignore the very real conspiracies that are totally out in the open. When the laws are written by the rich and powerful, there is simply no need for them to be subtle or hide their actions. Here is Galizia's car:
The Complicated History of the Haitian Revolution - Freedom and Genocide
This is a branch off of what I normally write, but the Haitian Revolution has recently become a fascinating topic for me, although I still have a lot to learn. As such, this will be an overview of a few major aspects of the Revolution, particularly its politics and consequences.
My interest in this topic was primarily sparked by images and memes some of my Facebook friends have been sharing. These posts often highlighted black leaders, in the United States and around the world who had been great leaders for their people. This generally seems like a fine way to highlight a part of history many people may not aware of, however, Emperor Jacques I of Haiti (Jean-Jacques Dessalines) was often listed amongst these heroic figures.
At first it is easy to see why - Dessalines was the key leader of the only successful slave rebellion in the New World, which took place in Haiti between 1791 and 1804. This rebellion was absolutely justified, and something that many black people understandably take pride in. It's always cool to see a genuinely oppressed group rise up and overthrow the oppressors who abused them. However, there is a problem with Emperor Jacques' legacy. That problem is genocide.
Once the rebellion succeeded an event took place called the 1804 Haitian Massacre. I hate to use this term, but this was a real "white genocide". During the massacre the newly liberated black populous of the island wiped out entire white communities. This is understandable in the case of the people who had directly abused them, but the freedmen mostly made no distinction between those whites who had wronged them and white people in general. This genocide took place as genocides normally do - by identifying an ethic group as a sort of threat, taking away their rights, and suddenly targeting them for elimination. Dessalines and his generals openly discussed wiping out the white population of the island out of concern that they would be rebellious and encourage European powers to invade the island. Dessalines made the call to wipe out the white population, first banning whites from leaving the island. The genocide was to be carried out by his top generals, and the soldiers were supposed to use silent weapons like swords so as not to alert the other whites, who might try to escape into the countryside. Of course, the property left behind was to be taken by the generals and their men.
As is often the case with genocide, the men were to be killed, while the women were not necessarily supposed to be eliminated (one can guess what purpose the women would serve).
Dessalines had to visit cities himself to ensure that his orders were carried out, as his soldiers often were unenthusiastic to carry out the genocide. He also enjoyed pressuring mixed-race soldiers to kill whites, so as to make sure that nobody could say only blacks took part. After his arrivals the genocides were carried out as one might predict. Whites were gathered near major buildings in cities and killed enmasse, or rounded up and taken outside the city to be slaughtered. Upon preparing to leave the city Emperor Jacques would loudly proclaim amnesty to all the surviving whites who had successfully hidden. Once those whites came out of hiding they were slaughtered.
White women were eventually killed as well, although almost always after all the men had been killed. The only exceptions were made for those who agreed to marry black men.
Many of the white communities that were wiped out were not even French. Although the French had been the ones to set up the colonial government on the island, the island was easily accessible by sea in an area with significant international travel, so many other ethnic communities settled in the colony as well.
**Legacy**
Despite some misguided individuals celebrating Emperor Jacques the First of Haiti (Jean-Jacques Dessalines) there is no question that he was a genocidal racist. Even though his anger, and the anger of the former slaves he led, is understandable, this does not change the fact that he ordered a systemic genocide.
News of the genocide soon reached Europe and the United States, in fact many refugees who escaped the island settled in the Southern United States. Unsurprisingly, the news polarized many citizens of these countries against abolition of slavery. The genocide soon became a talking point among supporters of slavery in the Southern United States as both a reason to oppress slaves more harshly and as evidence that freeing slaves would lead to violence.

My Thoughts on Minds "Free Speech" Social Media Site
Minds.com is certainly a unique site in this day and age. When I first considered signing up for Minds I was a bit concerned about how I would be received there - the site is known for having a lot of Right-Wing politics. Was I about to walk into an alt-right circlejerk?
Minds is pro-free speech social media site, and aside from Gab, has probably attracted the most support from the right-wing of any such site. I don't inherently mind that (no pun intended), but I am looking for potentially enlightening conversations, and political bubbles don't tend to lend themselves to that. However, one day I decided to take the plunge at just see what the site has to offer. To my own mild surprise, I have found myself going back to it nearly everyday over the first few weeks. So what have I found that is so interesting to me?
Although the site certainly leans Right, you will truly find people of every political stripe on the site. I have found the alt-right, but I've also found Socialists, Social Democrats, Centrists, Anarchists, and Libertarians. It is a fantastic variety of people, all brought together by the promise of free speech and anonymity. It is finally a chance to share all of the thoughts we have, whether they are politically correct or not - and let's keep it real, we all have some beliefs that are not totally PC.
Today it occurred to me that what I really like about the site is that its rewards system and general setup lends itself to *discussion* rather than just upvotes or downvotes. Unlike Facebook there aren't a bunch of different reactions to dismiss those you disagree with, or a way to just report them. Instead, the culture is such that if you have a problem with somebody, you handle it like an adult. You either move on, or you leave a comment with your point of view. This has led to a lot of interesting conversations over the past few weeks. As long as you aren't easily offended, I'd recommend checking the site out! Even with my left-leaning politics I don't really need to care if I piss some people off, since I'm not going to get banned or "cancelled" anyway. It's a nice feeling.
With that said, I would not recommend it as strongly as I do Read.Cash or Publish0x. The userbase over the past few months seems to be learning even more strongly right-wing than previously, leading to it becoming closer to a bubble. With that said, I can still say whatever I want, and if people get pissed off it's their problem. Still, you can find some scary people on there, especially in regards to people who seem to believe every conspiracy theory they can think of. Every website has those people, but Minds has a higher percentage than other sites.
You can certainly earn money on Minds, but it is harder than Read.Cash or Publish0x from what I have seen. People can donate Bitcoin or Ethereum, or the site's own token system, but it seems less common, and it is harder to add or withdraw funds than many other sites are.
Mind's popularity and Alexa rank have fallen a lot in the past year, so it seems to be becoming less popular, despite still having some unique positive traits.
Overall, I would give Minds a 5/10 ranking, but I would still recommend it for those who strongly want a pro-freedom of speech website.

Would Men's Studies help Men Explain our Struggles?
Feminism has done great things for women - from suffrage, to equal pay, to reproductive freedom, feminists have won genuinely important victories for women's rights. I have criticisms of the current feminist movement in the US, but I am jealous of it in one way - it teaches women how to describe their struggles. Feminism gives women a widely understood shared language. They know how to describe harassment and discrimination. They have phrases like "mansplaining" to describe men condescendingly telling them things, "slut-shaming" to denounce people who criticize their sexuality, "man-terrupting" to criticize men who interrupt them. I'm not saying those words are used accurately, fairly, or are truly behaviors unique to men; however, they do make it easy for women to advocate their views.

In recent months I've come to the conclusion that men often lack similar language. For example, there was a time recently where a woman very condescendingly described to me how she believed men act in regards to expressing emotions. It was based completely on stereotypes, and said in such a generalized way that it was clearly wrong. I waited for her to finish (no man-terrupting!), and then explained that I have seen men act in ways that do not fit that stereotype at all. She was not open to that feedback.
So what happened there? How do I describe why that bothered me? It took me a while and a lot of reflection to realize that this is a female version of "mansplaining". If a man had told a woman how women act (inaccurately), then refused to listen to feedback, they would absolutely accused of mansplaining. But men have no word for that, so I had to think it over.
Another example I have seen is men struggling to explain that many feel a sense of isolation from those around them/the world. This is probably partially because men are less interested in being parts of large social groups, on average, compared to women. However, a lot of this is because men's emotions are more likely to be ignored, or even lead to social punishment, when expressed. I do not believe that ignoring/punishment of men expressing emotions come entirely from one gender or another. However, many men are not used to explaining when this happens - they tend to just feel hurt or discouraged and push through. Pushing through emotions is not always bad, but it is a problem when men are unable to express why the way they are treated annoys them. This hurts everyone, since men end up feeling ignored and discouraged from expressing emotion in the future, and women end up confused when men get irritated at this state of affairs.
It took me a long time to realize that, in certain interactions, I felt like I expressed an emotion and it was totally ignored or discouraged. That idea is very simple, but very important. If you are a man reading this, think back to a time you felt frustrated by a conversation. I'd be willing to bet there is a good chance that at some level you may have felt that your emotions were expressed, but not received well (or at all). Thinking about when/how to express that directly is an important skill to learn.
These are just a couple examples, but I believe the underlying issue is that men do not communicate with each other like women. What I mean by that is that men tend to be more individualistic - men do not reach out and support each other in the same way. Men do not, **generally**, have the same sense of community. This often leaves men to figure how to express/explain themselves alone, rather than in a unified way. The more unified language women have is beneficial because it becomes something of a "cultural meme", meaning that people recognize and understand what they are saying immediately.

So what is the solution to this imbalance? Online groups like Men's Rights Activists seek to address this in a sense - although I think their focus is a bit different. I do not identify as an MRA because I view that movement as fractured, making it hard to be totally comfortable with, and many members of it have some genuinely problematic beliefs. Their focus tends to be on discrimination against men, but less, at least right now, on helping men build up these tools I am talking about. However, they do raise awareness amongst men of problems men face, which can help lead men to reflect more on how to describe these problems.
What about Men's Studies? After all, feminist/women's studies have certain been responsible for giving women some of the language I referenced. I think Men's Studies could help, but I also have some serious concerns about it. I don't want men to end up having the same sort of "grievance studies" focused around justifying a sense of perpetual victimhood that Women's Studies has become.

When it Comes to Identity Politics Bernie Sanders has the Right Idea
As we approach the 2020 election this is something Democrats need to keep in mind if they want to win! I wrote an article about this topic for the first time over a year ago, but I think it is more relevant than ever right now.
When you think "Bernie Sanders", you almost certainly think of Democratic Socialism, Social Democracy, and/or Progressivism. Regardless of whether you agree with any of those ideologies, you almost certainly do not think about the fact that Bernie is Jewish, non-religious, or likely an Atheist. That is because he has always consistently run on the issues, rather than on his identity.
Compare this with Hillary's "I'm with her" slogan. One reason Bernie Sanders is America's most popular politician is because he does not run on his identity. That doesn't mean he hides it, but he only brings it up when it is truly relevant, or when asked. He never said "Jews, vote for me because we can have the first Jewish president!" Throughout his whole career, he had railed against using identities to divide people. He has always talked about the importance of economic issues and bringing people together to solve problems that the vast majority of us face - like economic stagnation, low wages, and a sense that we can not move forward.
Bernie recognizes that the vast majority of people have common interests, and while we don't need to ignore that particular groups may suffer from particular issues, we should not run on traits that divide us. A Democratic Party in Bernie's image would not be focused on identity politics, the modern definition of social justice, or only the plights of certain people while shaming others. It would be an issue based party. Even if you dislike a lot of what Bernie stands for, our nation as a whole would be better off with an issues-based Democratic party. An issues focused Democratic Party would win more elections and appeal to voters who are currently turned away by its almost only social-issues based strategy.
This is an idea I am sure I will expand on more in upcoming articles I write. Right now, I just wanted to throw this out there because I have met a ton of people who seem to think that Bernie supporters are all SJWs who oppose free speech and embrace 4th wave feminism. In reality, most of the SJWs went for Hillary, even though she was less progressive, because they place *so much* of an emphasis on identity.If somebody prioritizes identity politics over economic policies they will end up almost blindly supporting somebody who could be the first female president over someone with better, and more developed, economic ideas. In 2020 a lot of the SJWs supported Kamala Harris, Kirsten Gillibrand, and to a lesser degree Elizabeth Warren.

Is Past Racism an Excuse to be anti-Vaccine?
I saw a post on Facebook a while ago that made me think about whether past racism is an acceptable excuse to not take vaccines, or at least the be skeptical of them. I don't think so, but I wanted to post this here just to see what other people think. This is especially because I know there are a lot of non-white people here. Let's briefly examine this.
There are two ideas at work here: First is that the history of medical malpractice involving testing unethically on black and brown people is a cause for medical skepticism. That history is real, and I do get why it would make some people skeptical of medicine in general. However, people need to overcome that. Fortunately, I think most people have done that. Ironically, it seems from what I have seen that Anti-vaxxers are overwhelmingly white. It seems like the black community almost universally understands that vaccines are safe and worth having. If nothing else, the fact that white people get the exact same vaccines should help allay any fears. I for one think that black and brown people are logical and reasonable enough to be swayed by evidence, rather than throwing money at them to manipulate their emotions...
Which gets us to the second idea - reparations. I am pretty openly anti-reparations in general. It certainly will not help people feel more comfortable to very publicly give reparations. That will just become an anti-vaxxer talking point in and of itself. In fact it could turn being anti-vaccine into a something of a political message among these communities. If people are already not trusting of medicine, how does giving them money change that? If somebody thinks they are going to be physically harmed, how much do you have to pay them. This really doesn't add up. University of Michigan Racially Segregates Meeting - for a "Progressive" Cause?
The University of Michigan-Dearborn and it's Center for Social Justice and Inclusion have apologized recently for racially segregating a meeting intended to foster discussion on racial reconciliation.
The Center for Social Justice and Inclusion hosted two virtual meetings to discuss racial issues, one of which was for people of color (POC) and the other for non-people of color. For what it's worth, "non-people of color" just means white. It was literally the same as saying it's a "White's only" meeting.
The intent behind this is a fantastic example of the horseshoe-theory of politics in action. I don't fully agree with the below diagram, but it gets the point across. Essentially the far-left and far-right sometimes look very similar in ways that you don't get in more moderate ideologies:
This segregation was an incredibly misguided attempt to create a "safe space" for people of color to discuss racism, and essentially a separate space for white people to discuss it.
Aside from the obviously segregation problem, I also wonder how they determined who was "white". Is somebody who is 1/8th black and 7/8ths European considered white? What about half and half (like Obama, who basically everyone considers black)? Are we going by the "one drop rule" here? This sounds like something the Nazis would do to determine who is part of the "master race".
If the far-right set up meetings, how similar would they look? I imagine they might also segregate them and invent measures to determine who is "white enough" to be in that meeting. It is disturbing, but also kind of amusing how incredibly misguided this effort was.
Almost all of the criticism for this event was only directed at the fact that there was an only white space. There was very little pushback against the all POC space.
With that said, this should be a wakeup call to everyone on the left. Don't embrace identity politics to a point where your actions resemble those of fascists. Don't be so open-minded your brain falls out. Focus on substantive issues that impact people's everyday lives, instead of dividing people up more based on irrelevant parts of their identity. This is not what the left needs to be about. Fortunately, many progressives (correctly!) think this series of actions is absurd and counterproductive.

Questions that Destroy the Argument for Reparations (In the US)
The following list of questions targets both the philosophical and practical grounds for reparations for decedents of slaves in the United States. This isn't about reparations in all cases, especially to those who were directly harmed by unjust actions (for example somebody who was shot by the police for no reason). The question of reparations for decedents of slaves has become a debate in the Democratic Party, with some of the Left wing (although not including Bernie Sanders!) voicing support for reparations. Feel free to add to the list in the comments:
Why should white people today, including those living in poverty, pay for what their ancestors did?
If low-income whites will be exempt from the tax, don't you think people will find a way to dodge it? (For example putting their money into crypto or otherwise obscuring the amount of wealth they have?)
What if a white person can not afford to pay for reparations? Will they be fined, or sent to jail for failure to pay taxes?
If a person refuses to pay the tax on ideological grounds, will they be fined or jailed for resisting?
In fact, how much will this all cost overall anyway?
What about the white family that immigrated here in the 1900s? Or even 2000s? Why should they have to pay for what people did before they were even in this country?
Taking the last question to its logical end, if a white person arrives in the US the day before a theoretical reparations tax is due, do they have to pay it? What if they become a citizen the day of the tax?
If a white person is here for an extended time, but is not a citizen, do they have to pay? If only white citizens have to pay, then wouldn't that discourage people from becoming citizens?
Who is to be put in charge of determining who is black?
Do white-passing people who are decedents of slaves count as black?
Who is to be put in charge of determining who is white? Do South Italians count? South Spaniards? Middle Eastern people? Jews? Slavs? All of those groups have been considered white or non-white at points in history.
What about mixed race people? Is somebody who is 3/4 white and 1/4 black free from paying reparations? Do they pay less reparations? What about somebody who is 1/4th native American, 1/4 black, and half white? Or any other mix?
Would a person who is a quarter white and 3/4 black get less in reparations than a somebody who is 100% black?
What about the decedents of abolitionists who did everything they could to end that system?
What about people who have both abolitionists and slave owners in their family tree?
What if someone is a decedent of both a slave and a slave-owner?
How will our nation deal with the intense racial divide and resentment this will cause?
A vast majority of white people in the US are decedents of people who came here after the end of slavery. Doesn't it seem weird to assign blame so...collectively?
How do you think the Democratic Party will survive the severe voting/political realignment this would cause? 85% of white people oppose reparations, and many will vote Republican if this happens. The Dems would get wiped out in most of the US.
Anywhere from a third to half of blacks oppose reparations. Why don't you listen to their opinions?
What about a black family that moved here only in the last decade or so? Are they entitled to reparations for something that happened 140+ years before they even came here?
Who will be in charge of determining if people fit all of the Demographic criteria above? How much would that new bureaucracy cost?
Finally, and I think one of the most important underlying flaws with the slavery reparations idea: Why do you not support reparations for other groups, like the LGBT community, non-religious people, Jews, Muslims, people living in poverty, disabled people, and especially Native Americans, all of whom are either facing discrimination right now, or have in very recent years? Don't they deserve reparations just as much? I mean, many of them were the *actual* people impacted, not just decedents 150 years later.
**Conclusion**:
The right-wing wins when people are divided by race. The left-wing wins when people are divided by class. The reparations debate does nothing but sidetrack the Democratic party and alienate voters in a way that would make it almost impossible for Democrats to win in the future.
