Is Google Pay safe to use in India and do you need a bank account in India?

Yes it is safe and you do need a bank account. Google pay leverages the Indian national digital payment platform called UPI - unified payments interface. As the name suggests it’s an open and secure platform for banks to move money through their accounts. Payment services such as Google pay use these platforms to provide a variety of digital payment services so that it very consumer friendly. These services utilise the banking system to transfer money between people/merchants through your bank account. Ultimately it is money being transferred from account to account in banks. Some of the other popular payment services other than google pay are Paytm, PhonePe etc.

Likelihood to Recommend. Google Wallet is well suited when I send an invoice and can get paid instantly via this service. And it is well suited when I don't need that money instantly, due to the time it takes to transfer to bank account for use. It is less appropriate when I need to be able to use it instantly.

Today i read an article in TOI that some banks are thinking of levying charges if number of transactions are greater than 20 in a month but I-T department has given warning that no charges wqill be levied. UPI has increased ease of payment and reduced charges but carriers like VISA and others have suffered loss and banks also have got less fees as UPI is free by NPCI and RBI.

That is true gpay is very secure app for indians. Cashback directly transfer in your account. That is awesome.
