UEFA's new national team based competition is the 'UEFA Nations League'. UEFA started this competition in 2019 to bring the matches between the national teams in Europe in one structure and make them interesting without playing meaningless friendly matches. Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal won the tournament in the first season.
When to start?
This year's Nations League was drawn on March 3 in Amsterdam. The main event will be played in September, October and November. The finals will be in June 2021. The relegation play-off matches will be in March 2022.

Whose rival?
UEFA's 55 associations have been divided into four sections. The UEFA national team is divided into four according to the co-efficient rating. The top 16 teams in the rankings are in League A, the teams between 18-32 are in League B, the teams between 33-48 are in League C and the teams from 49 to 55 are in Group D. There are several groups in each league. League A, B and C have four groups and D-two groups. Each group has four teams (only one group in Group D has 3 teams).

The way the leagues work
Each team will play against the other teams in the group on home and away basis. The four group winners of League A will play in the Nations League finals in June next year. There will be two semifinals, a third place match and a final.
Group B, C and D group winners will be promoted. And the teams at the bottom of the group in League A and B will be relegated. As there are four groups in League C and two groups in D, a play-off will be held in March 2022 for the relegation of two teams from C. If a team from the play-offs also plays in the play-offs of the 2022 World Cup, the two teams in League C, ranked 47th and 48th, will automatically be relegated.
Is there any connection between the Nations League and the 2022 World Cup qualifiers?
The World Cup qualifiers in Europe are the same as before. The ten group winners of the qualifying round will advance directly to the main event, but there have been some changes in the play-offs. The play-offs will now have two knockout rounds, from which three teams will have the opportunity to play in the main event. The playoffs will feature ten group runners-up and the top two group winners in the Nations League (who did not qualify directly for the main event or the playoffs).
