Jahangir Upazila Juba League convener arrested in connection with attack on Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer Wahida Khanam and her father.
A joint team of RAB and police has arrested two people in connection with the attack on Ghoraghat Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Dinajpur Wahida Khanam and her father Omar Ali Sheikh. One of the detainees is Jahangir Hossain, son of Abul Kalam of Raniganj Kashigari area of the upazila. The other accused in the case is Asadul Haque, son of Amjad Hossain of Osmanpur.
Detained Jahangir is the convener of Ghoraghat Upazila Juba League. He has been serving as the convener of Upazila Juba League since 2016.
Ghoraghat police sources said the two arrested were drug users and businessmen. There are three cases of attempted murder of the municipal mayor, land grabbing and extortion in the name of Jahangir. Jahangir is also accused of trying to assassinate Dinajpur-6 MP Shibli Sadiq.
Earlier, on Friday (September 4) morning, a joint team of RAB and police arrested Jahangir on the basis of secret information. Asadul, the main accused in the case filed in connection with the attack on Wahida Khanam, was arrested from her sister's house in Kaliganj area of Hakimpur upazila.
Incidentally, Wahida Khanam and her father Omar Ali Sheikh were attacked after entering the house with the ventilator of UNO's official residence in Ghoraghat Upazila Parishad around 3pm on Wednesday. Seriously injured Wahida Khanam was admitted to the Doctors Hospital in Rangpur and taken to the ICU. His father was admitted to Rangpur Medical College Hospital. However, Waheeda Khanam was airlifted to Dhaka and admitted to the Neuroscience Hospital on Thursday (September 3rd) as her condition was critical. Then, at night, he underwent surgery to remove the bone that had penetrated the brain.
Wahida Khanam's brother Sheikh Farid on Thursday night filed a case accusing unknown persons of attempted murder. Apart from the police, RAB, DB and various intelligence agencies are trying to unravel the mystery of the attack.
