Always On Your Phone

We're the most complex organic machines ever to have existed,

Humans have been around for millennia with a history twisted,

But never have they had a rival as great than the new thing we own,

The relatively simple device that throws us shade, the Mobile Phone!

It eclipses the need for conversation by opening our mouth to speak,

Allows us to improve dexterity by giving our thumbs their tweek,

Ensures privacy when we don't want others to see what we're doing,

Plots our lives, positions, finances and even helps pick who you're screwing.

Whether you've ordered pizza or booked your next holiday or purchase,

You begin to wonder just what the damn thing will be able to do next,

Already most partners admit it's a passion killer in their own bedroom,

And endless messages at midnight or beyond tend to spell imminent doom.

But how can it beat putting it down for even just the shortest while,

Sitting and holding hands or seeing or making your loved ones happily smile,

Engaging in a conversation deeper than the stuff on the last blog you saw,

Or sharing in a friendship where actions speed louder and mean more.

Oh for the portable, affordable, changeable, app rearrangeable phone,

The sleek beauty that doesn't criticise or scutinise just is, a thing we own,

Ours and at our beck and call whenever we wish to turn it off or on,

We can leave it behind easily with no attachments the complexity all gone.

She sits there wondering after so many years of marriage is this how it is?

He can get more from his phone than her what's that say about marital bliss?

And she broods or she doubts what is it he really does on that infernal thing?

Who does he chat to, what is he doing, who's he email, phone or secretly ring?

But they don't talk about it or the issues that lead to the endless fights,

The bickering and crying the empty feelings they aren't putting to rights,

And time ticks on and things get worse so she wonders which to curse,

Him for not realising the extent of his distraction or a phone, what's worse?

The light in her eyes is filming over and she's thinking of planning escape,

To go for a moment and leave him to it, or go forever and start the red tape,

This is the moment you wish an app would tell him to pay attention and go,

When technology is great but you need a healthier balance you know.

So to all those who sit back to back without ever seeing the people there,

Please give it a rest once in a while and show the ones you love you truly care,

Getting to know and explore and share in the lives of others is a joy,

Try getting to do just that and put down the Mobile, don't let it destroy.

Sure it's harder and takes more effort to engage in real person interactions,

More self consciously you have to focus and you miss your distractions,

But the pics and the tweets and the blogs and all will still be there later,

Please be a people lover and don't be a phone statistic by adding a new hater.

That's it I've said it and I'm on my phone but it's okay cos I'm all alone,

I've typed this up smiling thinking of the times others were walls of stone,

I'm not saying give it up completely I swear I think it's a great contraption,

But please please develop yourself in other ways too, your soul wants action!
