We all have been taught to respect our elders and those who are older than us, but we don’t often know why we should or how it could impact our lives in the future. Although many young people now feel they don’t need to respect their elders because their generation knows best, research shows that this isn’t always the case. In fact, showing respect towards others can help you to build better relationships with friends and family as well as offer career advantages throughout your life. Here’s how showing respect can benefit you both now and in the future.

WAYS TO SHOW RESPECT

Of course, there’s more than one way to show respect. This might sound silly, but one of my favorite ways is through eye contact and a smile. I’m sure many people reading will scoff at that, but for me personally that makes all the difference in a conversation. A simple Hey how’s it going? with a genuine smile goes a long way when showing someone older respect. It's not just about Sir, ma'am, please, thank you etc it can be done with a simple smile as well.

HOW TO GET RESPECT

One of life’s universal truth is that people often treat you in a way consistent with how you treat them. When you show respect and appreciation, others respond in the same kind way. Treat elders as you wish to be treated when you're older, Every person has different ways of living life, let them live however they want to and don't judge them but respect them in their own way.

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU SHOW SOME MANNERS

How many times have you said please and thank you? How many times have you offered your seat to an older person? Have you ever considered someone else before deciding on something, or just gave up what you wanted in order to go along with someone else? The fact is that all of these things show a good deal of respect for others. In fact, they all involve manners and consideration, but they also involve our respect for others. And when it comes to respecting elders, one thing is clear: we often don't do enough. Whether those elders be parents or grandparents or great grandparents, whether they live next door or across town—it doesn't matter, we should always value and respect them.

THE IMPORTANCE OF RESPECTING OTHERS

There’s an old saying that goes, You can’t teach an old dog new tricks. It means that older people can’t learn or try new things, but that isn’t true in many cases. In fact, learning a new language or developing a new hobby later in life has been shown to positively impact brain health and may stave off Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. When you respect someone just because they're old, because of their age, whether they earned it or not, you give them a sense of value in their last days and they get a new energy to live their life from a new way with a fresh beginning . And as we've learned from many recent stories about passing generations, helping others as they live out their final days can bring great peace of mind when we ourselves grow old someday.

RESPECT YOUR ELDERS

It can be tempting, as a professional, to dismiss advice from older colleagues. But taking advantage of their experience (and wisdom) is an easy way to boost your own career Here’s why you should respect those who are older than you at work. They may have more authority and influence than you realize, The hierarchy of seniority in any organization isn’t always clear cut, some employees may seem like peers because they occupy similar roles or departments, but they might actually outrank you on paper. They can offer valuable perspective and advice No matter how well-versed you are in your field, there’s always something to learn from people with more experience and expertise—and that includes managers who have decades of wisdom under their belts.

AGE IS JUST A NUMBER

When you look at someone, do you sometimes dismiss them based on their age? The trouble with ageism is that it is a blanket judgment we throw over people. It’s worth bearing in mind that just because someone is older than you, doesn’t mean they’re out of touch with modern life or no longer productive. Age isn’t everything, make sure that any judgments you make about a person aren’t based on something as arbitrary as their year of birth.

CONCLUSION

Of course, respect is a two-way street. To make sure you’re getting respect in return, be nice and kind toward others. Don’t yell or curse them, don’t expect special treatment even in return, stay Polite and neutral, and definitely don’t hurt them. It might sound like a lot of work to show respect to everyone all day long, but it's once you make it a habit . Remember—the little things really do matter.

Very good advice. Although respect is not only a matter of age, it is always wise to show consideration to those who come before you.

Many make the mistake of looking down on someone because they consider them old. Few stop to think that the world they know was in part forged by the generations that preceded us.

Besides, as you rightly say, one will also (if one is fortunate enough) grow old. So, if you want respect spare no effort in giving respect.

The expression I use "two-way street" is very appropriate.

Greetings.

I have been taught right from childhood to respect elders and everyone. We earn respect through respecting others and how we want to be treated too should make us do unto others. There are benefits in respecting elders because you learn a lot from them, you see life in another perspective. You succeed through respect. Nice article 👍

Exactly princess, we get to learn so much from them and we know we're going to become the same one day so we should never disrespect them, they need it the most.

Respecting those who are older than you is indeed important. From simple gestures to even bigger way to show it, however I respect is not about age or gender or race. One should know how to respect a person regardless of his or her demographic profile 🤗

It's very important to respect people around, in this way, we can connect them in a nice way. It doesn't matter what kind of life we have the most important that we know how to respect people.
