Before railways, cars and aeroplanes were invented, message could not be carried very fast. They could be carried only as quickly as man could travel on foot, on horse or camel or in a boat. Until postage stamps were invented
Only rich and powerful people could easily sent messages to places far from their home. But after the invention of steam engines, cars and aeroplanes, messages could be carried from place to place much quicker than ever before. When postage stamps were invented and post office were built in towns and villages all over the world, everyone who could afford to buy a stamp could send a message to another town or country.
When you buy a postage stamp to stick on a letter, you are paying for that letter to be Carried to the address that is written on the envelope. The cost of the stamps that are stuck on a letter is the price that is charged by the post office for carrying that letter from one place to another. It may be carried by mail van or train and then by ship or aeroplane.
This can be done so quickly nowadays that it can be read in a foreign country only a few days after it was posted.
There are even quicker ways of sending messages. If a message is urgent, it can be telegraphed - that you can send a telegram. For example, if you are in los angels and you have to send an urgent message to your brother in newyork, you can go to post office and send him a telegram. Your message underneath his address.
When you hand the form in at the office, the clerk will count the words you have written and then tell you bhow much you have to pay. When you have paid him, your telegram will be sent.
But telegraph form on which the message is written is not sent to newyork. It is kept at the post office at which it was accepted. But your message and your brother's name and address are telegraphed to the main post office in newyork. They are copied on to another telegraph form and that is taken to your brother's address. He will get your message only hours after it was sent.
But when your air mail or letter telegram is sent to you must wait for a reply. What can be done if you want a reply at once? The answer is: use the telephone
Nowadays you can telephone from America to almost every country in the world.
But now since the world developed much things became easier than before new things are invented. You can use phones, tablets, computers and other things to send or receive message quicker than before
Although your friend may be millions kilometres away, but you can speak, see, and send him a message. Impact you can use video call or voice call. And when you hear his voice as clearly as you did when you last saw him, the world seems a very small now. You can go to any part of it now in some few hours.
