Lions prefer to keep away from men, and if they happen to meet one, they will usually go away quickly and peacefully. A wounded lion, or one which is been driven into a tight corner from which it cannot escape, or a lioness with young cubs to protect, may be dangerous. When they have just had a good meal they are usually quite harmless; but when the are hungry they may attack a man without warning. They are always more dangerous at night, which is their hunting time, than during the day, when they like to sleep.
