The masai of East Africa live in a land witbh plenty of lions. They own large herds of cattle, and so they are naturally the enemy of lions.
Every young Masai man wants people to know how very courageous he is. If he gets the blood of lion on his spear while he is hunting, he is considered to be brave man, and his friends and all the Young women admire him. If he actually kills a lion he is considered a real hero
The killing of a lion must be done in a special way. A group of twenty or thirty young Masai go into the forest find lion, and came up to it from all sides. They wear no clothes or ornament that might hamper them, and they carry only their spears and shields
They move closer and closer to the lion until it leaps at the nearest man, who throws his spear and protects himself with his shield.
