Not in the Same Boat
People are the same, by structure, but not on the appearance and life itself.
Sometimes, we tend to compare our life with other people.
Why others are like this or like that?
Why am I like this this not like them
Why is it so unfair to be this way?
You know what? The diversity of our life can't be changed anymore. No one is living identically with each other. Even thoose identical twins are living a different life despite the similarity on their appearances.
Even with our state living, we are all different in so many ways. Some are struggling to survive each day, while others are enjoying their life to the fullest without thinking that much on life problems.
When the pandemic started, we often hear the phrase:
"we are not in the same boat".
This may seem overuse by many people around us and even in virtual world particularly in different social media platforms.
The government and health authorities keep on reminding the public to stay at home to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus, but some are refusing to follow it because of some valid reasons they have and that includes working outside to survive.
Those who belong to a well-off family look at the unfortunate ones as if they are stubborn for not following the guidelines, yet they refuse to think about a more reasonable excuses why others cannot stay at home as what the authorities mandated.
Others cannot just follow a certain rule because if they did, they might not survive the day. They might be in total agony, not just them, but their whole family as well.
What most people lacked off is being being understanding about the life of their co-humans. Even though they clearly see the whole situation of a person, they are not using their mind and heart to understand everything clearly. They think that their ways of living can be applied on other people too. Like, why they are surviving while staying at home, while others can't and chose to be outside instead. Like, it's very easy to stay at home, but why others can't do it? You know what? If they just have sufficient supplies of primary needs at home, maybe they won't chose to disobey the authorities with their "stay at home" guideline.
Another situation to further clarify the phrase "we are not in the same boat" is when talking about depression.
For those who never experienced it, they might say that depression is just a form of an illusion or just an excuse to get sympathy from others. They said so because why are they not feeling depressed despite the problems they have. Like, they can handle their problems really well, but why others can't. Some even have the guts to mock someone for not being able to handle their emotions very well unlike them who are self-proclaimed expert in that field.
We are not in the same boat in a sense that we are experiencing different life problems that might be easy for some to handle, but not on us.
Some may find it easy to surpass, but for us, we are struggling a lot.
Not because someone can handle it so well means that it will be generalized as an easy task to accomplish. Our skills, intelligence, and social status must be taken into consideration as well.
Some are feeling depressed in studying at school because of mental, financial and social problems. For other students, studying couldn't be the source of depression just because they are intelligent, rich and beautiful that might catch everyone's attention. But, for those who are living an unfortunate life may think of it in the other way. They are being depressed as a student because; they don't have enough money to sustain their education; they are not intelligent enough to absorb all the knowledge presented to them; and not beautiful enough to be loved by everyone, but are rather bullied because of having many flaws.
Therefore, we shouldn't treat everyone as similar to us. Not because we are not struggling into something we find easy, doesn't mean that others will never have a problem on it.
CLOSING THOUGHTS
We might be on the same ocean, but not on the same boat. Just because we are comfortable with the boat we are in, doesn't mean that some people with their respective boats are relaxing as well. We don't have the rights to mock someone by having problems unto something we thought of as a simple thing.
Let's be more understanding and compassionate beings. We are all unique and so, we are living differently. Our skills, abilities, behavior and attitude are diverse with each other so we shouldn't underestimate someone for not being able to do something we perceived as easy to accomplish. Everyone have their reasons why they are doing/not doing such things.
Let's just respect them by trying to understand the situation they are into. In that way, despite the differences we have, we are still living harmoniously.
