My article tackles the reasons why Microsoft has pivoted into Open source.

Microsoft Corporation an American multinational technology company whose headquarters is located in Redmond, Washington. It develops, manufactures, licenses, supports, and sells computer software, consumer electronics , personal computers , and related services. For some time now Microsoft corporation has gone against the idea of open source (OSS a type of computer software in which source code is released under a license in which the copyright holder grants users the rights to study, change, and distribute the software to anyone and for any purpose). Microsoft corporation does not want users Glossing over license rules and  requirements.

 Most people want’s to just amend somethings  which is only amendable with open source software, plus open source software is also sometimes conflated with the free software movement, which can add to the confusion around whether open source means “free” . In a new era where people sort to learn new thing many Microsoft operators migrate to open source software or rather operating systems as it will help them operate, learn and understand more. Microsoft pivoted to open source because company management realized it was losing markets to open source, first they lost the phone market where they had some 80% entirely, then they tried to compete in the supercomputer market and lost that one in less than a year. They also tried to compete with servers for stock markets and lost that one entirely.

Bill Hilf, Microsoft’s first head of open source software, puts it: “We want to offer as many types of applications and as many types of systems as we can, so they can help that flywheel spin. We don’t see[open source] on Azure as altruistic.

In conclusion, open source is what underdogs do to win. Microsoft Corporation simple sees it as a platform that drives business.
