A $9 million mansion in suburban Toronto was the site of an underground, illegal casino.
According to a local CBS affiliate, Canadian authorities raided the Markham residence and seized 11 firearms, more than $1 million in cash, gaming machines and tables, and more than $1.5 million worth of alcohol.
It was one of three sites raided in the last several months as part of “Project Endgame.” There are 33 people facing assorted charges stemming from the raid. Two other mansions were raided, but the Markham residence was the most extravagant of the three locations.
The Toronto Star said that local police cited the COVID-19 pandemic as the reason for the rise of illegal, underground casinos. With many regulated, brick-and-mortar operations either closed or under several restrictions, there was an opportunity for illegal operators to gain traction.
