We see throughout scripture the wisdom of Proverbs reflected in the life and teachings of the prophets and apostles of God. Today’s proverb is no exception, and is expanded on in great fashion as Jesus teaches a parable that reflects this truth,
“There was a rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and who feasted sumptuously every day. And at his gate was laid a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who desired to be fed with what fell from the rich man's table. Moreover, even the dogs came and licked his sores. The poor man died and was carried by the angels to Abraham's side. The rich man also died and was buried, and in Hades, being in torment, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham far off and Lazarus at his side. And he called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the end of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in anguish in this flame.’ But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish. And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been fixed, in order that those who would pass from here to you may not be able, and none may cross from there to us.’ And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, to send him to my father's house— for I have five brothers—so that he may warn them, lest they also come into this place of torment.’ But Abraham said, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them hear them.’ And he said, ‘No, father Abraham, but if someone goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’ He said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.’” Luke 16:19-31
In this parable Jesus reflects the wisdom of this proverb, as the poor man who seems pitiful and lowly comes out on top and the rich man who seems wise and blessed is brought down low. Even though this was a common theme in scripture and in much literature in the ancient world, people still went right along amassing wealth for themselves. They still do today. Even with this wisdom being an almost universal theme, people get bogged down chasing money, wealth, and power. The rich man in the parable asks for a greater witness, as wisdom has apparently become cliché. Send someone back from the dead! People will listen to them, certainly.
But Jesus foreshadows the reality of people’s hearts, as Abraham declares in the parable, “‘If they do not hear Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be convinced if someone should rise from the dead.” Jesus did raise an actual Lazarus from the dead. Still people were not convinced. Jesus Himself rose from the grave, and people are still not convinced. But the truth is apparent, both in proverb and parable, in word and deeds. The poor in Christ will be found to be wise. And the rich, who rely on themselves, will be shown to be foolish.
So today, let’s live out the wisdom of scripture in our lives. Even if others look down on us as fools, who have given up much and are poorer for it, in Jesus we will be vindicated and in the end, welcomed into God’s very presence.
Prayer for Today:
Father, thank you so much for your bountiful spiritual blessings. Help me to lavish in the luxury of your love for me. Keep the temptation to seek my own will and comfort far from me, and help me to be a willing servant in your Kingdom. Jesus, send to me your Holy Spirit, that I may be truly wise, and live out the life your Father wills for me. Amen.
