12. Zilean, the great Chronokeeper, is named after Tom “Zileas” Cadwell, a design director at Riot Games. Cadwell’s got an impressive pedigree, with a computer science degree from MIT, and credits at Blizzard on Warcraft III The Frozen Throne and WoW.

13. The game references a 14th-Century italian knight. The famous Italian fencing master Fiore dei Liberi had a large influence on martial arts, due mainly to his illuminated manuscripts which have survived for over 600 years. In League of Legends, the character Fiora uses fencing as her fighting style and she has a very similar name.

14. George “HotshotGG” Georgallidis, dropped out of college to pursue a professional career in League of Legends. Youth is a huge factor in rapid reflexes and reaction speed, so he struck while the iron was hot and it served him well.

20. Zyra, Cassiopeia, Fiora, Shyvan & Elise Share the Same Voice. These five characters are all performed by voice actress Karen Strassman. If she sounds familiar it’s because she’s also worked on iconic anime like Gurren Lagann, Samurai Champloo and Code Geass.

22. Malphite is an awesome looking tank champion. If you’ve played him a few times or just have a keen eye, you’ll see that when he used his “Ground Slam” attack, the fist imprinted on the ground is actually Riot Games’ logo!

23. The Fear effect causes an opponent to walk away from your opponent whilst also having their movement speed reduced. There’s quite a few “scary” champions and we are surprised this effect isn’t utilised by more of them. The only champions who can make use of the Fear effect are Shaco, Volibear, Fiddlesticks (shown) and Nocturne.

24. Teemo is based off an emoticon. In fact, his name is an anagram of ‘emote’. If you look at his terrifyingly devilish smile, you’ll notice that it’s similar to the emoticon

25. Nidalee’s lore reveals that she was raised by a family of cougars. The Bestial Huntress also has the ability to change into a cougar herself… but she also has a hidden passive that makes allied champions who are a lower level than her gain a bit more experience when they’re close to her!

26. If you read up on any of the in-game lore, you’ll find out in the Journal of Justice that the golden golem actually runs a chain of magic cafes where he offers “Fleshling Compatibility Services” through which champions can engage in “instantaneous mating.”

27. The BF Sword in League of Legends is a fairly expensive basic item that does about 50 attack damage. Maybe it fetches a premium price because it’s got that “90s cool” attitude straight from Doom’s most over-the-top weapon.

31. The official odds of witnessing and getting a pentakill have been released. The chance of simply witnessing a pentakill are 1 in 150, the chances of you getting a pentakill yourself is a huge 1 in 1500. Obviously this doesn’t mean that no matter how good you are, you will only get one every 1500 games, but probably it was taken from the amount of games per pentakill or so.

32. While Irelia gets all the notoriety for nerfing, Kassadin’s actually had his skill set swatted down more often. He recently had his cooldown time increased by 8 seconds. The poor guy can’t catch a break.

33. On the Twisted Treeline map, there is a powerful enemy called Vilemaw. He looks like a tough cookie and you shouldn’t even try to face him until you’ve grown powerful yourself. He has a different side though, if you and a friend use the “/dance” command in front of him, he dances too.

34. The Juggernaut skill is located in the Defense mastery perk that grants a 3% bonus to your maximum health. What is quite trivial is the resemblance of the Juggernaut art to the champion Braum. We are not 100% sure this has been confirmed but it is interesting nonetheless.

35. After you win the Howling Abyss, be patient for about half a minute and the Ice Witch Lissandra will give some cool narration in her frosty aristocratic accent. It was the best of times and the worst of times. It was the time of the three sisters.

36. There is a hidden passive in League of Legends that reduces “ninja” type champions health by 1 for each other ninja on their team. You have to love these kind of features, meaningless to the gameplay but add an extra level of depth.

While they don’t significantly impact game play, they are definitely amusing to see. For instance, Yasuo taunts ninjas by saying, “Cute mask. Your, uh… mom sew that?” as a reference to the rivalry that exists between samurai and ninjas.

43. It might be a bit too much to ask when you’re concentrating on the game, but there actually are snakes slithering around on the Rift. However, when Cassiopeia is chosen as a champion, all of them mysteriously disappear. They reappear when she’s killed.

44.According to renowned eSports commentator Leigh Smith, the sound effects for Zac’s squishes were “made from dog food and beans inside a condom slapped against a wall.” Hats off to Riot for their disgusting ingenuity.

45. In honor of a Make-A-Wish patient who visited Riot Games, Jax will occasionally say, “Here’s to you, kid,” to honor his memory. Jax was his favorite character, and Riot used the Jaximus skin to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
