The smallest country in the world we usually understand is the Vatican City in Europe. But there are smaller countries than this. With an area of 0.25 sq km, the country has only 50 inhabitants (2013 census). The country has its own flag, passport, currency.
The Principality of Sealand is the smallest country in the world, located on the coast of Suffolk in British waters in the North Ocean. The country also has a capital. The name of the capital is HM Fort Raffs. The currency is the sealed dollar. The state web address is SealandGov.org.
The country is actually a seaport used during World War II. The British planned to build a fort on the coast of England out of fear that the German army might invade England at any time. Sealand is an abandoned port.
No sovereign state in the world has yet recognized or opposed Sealand. Bates claims, however, that since it was a World War II port, Britain and Germany have practically recognized it.
The military port was occupied by Paddy Roy Bates in 1966 and was declared an independent state. The site was originally used as a radio station for pirates. Bates snatched the state from them. His intention was to set up his own station there.
In 1965, he tried to establish Sealand as a nation-state. He then formulated a constitution and other symbols of a state.
In old age, Bates returned to mainland Essex and replaced his son, Michael. He died in October 2012 at the age of 91. Since then, Bates' representative, his son, has served as head of state and government.
