The Teesta is not a very big river. However, its trajectory has brought about many geographical changes in Bangladesh. The name Teesta originates from the ancient Trisrota. It originates from the Panthanari Glacier, enters Bangladesh through Sikkim and West Bengal, and eventually merges into the Brahmaputra.According to Vanben Brock's map, the Teesta is divided into three streams from Jalpaiguri in India. The eastern section is Karotoya, the middle section is 'Atrai' and the western section is Purnabhaba. These three sections are also mentioned in Rennell's map. The river Teesta is also mentioned in the Periplus texts written in the first century AD.During the flood of 18, the Teesta separated from the Padma and joined the Brahmaputra. Bangladesh is currently in talks with India over its share of water. According to the 2011 agreement, the water will be divided into 50:50 parts. However, the signing of the agreement is being delayed due to the opposition of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
