Syed Shamsul Haque was born on 26 December 1935 in Kurigram district of Bangladesh. His father Syed Siddique Hussain and mother Halima Khatun. Father Syed Siddique Hussain was a homeopathic doctor by profession. Syed Haque is the eldest of his parents' eight children.
Syed Haque's education began at Kurigram Minor School. There he studied till sixth class. He was then admitted to Kurigram High English School. Then in 1950, Syed Shamsul Haque passed the Matriculation (now SSC) examination with letter marks in Mathematics. Syed Shamsul Haque's father wanted him to teach him medicine. Ignoring his father's wishes, he fled to Bombay in 1951. There he worked as an assistant in a movie production house for more than a year. Then in 1952 he returned to the country and enrolled in the humanities branch of Jagannath College as per his wish. After passing the college, he was admitted to the English department of Dhaka University in 1954. He left the school in 1956 before graduation. Shortly afterwards, his first novel, The Land of the Walls, was published.
He was taken to London on April 15, 2016 due to lung problems. He was diagnosed with lung cancer at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London. There the doctors gave him chemotherapy and radiotherapy. After four months of treatment, he was brought back to the country on September 2, 2016. He breathed his last on 27September 2017 (12 Ashwin 1423 BS) at United Hospital in Dhaka. The next day, on Wednesday, 26 September (12 Ashwin 1423 BS), the first phase of Janaza will be held at 10 am at the Tejgaon premises of Channel I Television, the second phase of Janaza will be held at the Central Mosque of Dhaka University at 2 pm And in the afternoon, after the third phase of Janaza in Kurigram, his body was buried next to Kurigram Government College.
